• Technics U-50.... info please?

    Hello there.

I wonder if anyone can help?

I have just bought this organ http://www.trademe.co.nz/Music-instr...-203311642.htm (a Technics U-50) but I don't know anything about organs having never owned (or played) one before!

Could anyone give me any general info on this model? Is it any good? Did I get a bargain or was I ripped off?! It cost $111.60 New Zealand which is about $55US... The condition is amazing.

Could anyone offer some advice on some of the tones I could achieve and what buttons and switches I would need to play with? Are there any tones/setups used by popular musicians I could copy?

Sorry for the typically amateur nature of these questions... but everyone starts somewhere I guess.

    Thanks

The U series dates from 1980 and the U50 was the 3rd from the top of the range. It's a typical Japanese organ of the era, and has an OK sound. There was an update halfway through the organ's life to the U50R, which had a better drum box.

It's basic flute sound is quite strong, actually better than the later E series, but its strings are a bit buzzy and solo instrumental sounds are - well - 1970's quality. Technics stopped making instruments a few years back, so there's no support from the manufacturer at all. There may be some people out there who have owners' books and would be willing to copy them for you. You've come to the right place.

Did you get a good deal? I could ask you "Are you happy with what you paid?" If so, then you did. Realistically, it's true value is zero, like all small organs from that era, but there is a 'street value' to it. I personally wouldn't have paid that much, maybe half that figure or less, but we're not talking a fortune anyway. The important thing is that you get enjoyment and pleasure from it, and you can't put a price on that!

As for set ups, try a soft setting of 8' flute and string ensemble on the lower, as an accompaniment to almost anything on the upper. The flute sounds are the main organ sounds, use these with the tremolo/chorus effect. Then you have the solo and percussion sounds to try out and you can mix some of the sound groups together.

There may be some other organ enthusiasts in your area who can help you, so it's worth asking around. Some music teachers (like me!) would be glad to have a new organ student.

It's not what you play. It's not how you play. It's the fact that you're playing that counts.

My U-60 manual, also covers the U-50, and i can scan the most technical parts for you (I guess you don't need the 'congratulations', and 'introduction to organ' pages) [:D].

The U-50 & U-60 are almost identical. It's only a matter of how many presets/solos/percussive/conductor variations you have. The drumbox, arpeggio and chord programmer is almost identical i think.

I really like the Technics U-series, because it was JUST before they were made all digital. The following E-series have 100% digital soundgenerators and filters and suddenly sounds a bit flat and boring imho.

      If there only was a midi-kit for a U-90... [;)]
