Hi folks,<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Recently the two 12" bass speakers of my Lowrey H25 had developed a speaker rattle that became progressively worse. A few days ago I decided I had enough. I took the two speakers out for inspection. They looked OK. No tears and cracks. But I found the paper cone very soft and the excursion folds around the outer circumference appeared to move a little too easily. I guess the paper got a little tired after 40 years of service. Just like some of us.

I mixed a solution of appr. 40%contact glue and 60% solvent. I then applied three coats of this mixture with a brush on the excursion folds of the speakers with a drying time of appr. 8 hrs between coats. I then mixed a solution of appr. 50%water and 50% PVA wood glue and painteditwith a brush on the rest of the paper cone - leaving the round centre bit (coil cover) untouched. To prevent any of the solution getting between the speaker coil and the magnet I did this with the speaker magnet facing up. Like painting a ceiling. In the same position I placed the speakers on a couple of timber battens to dry. Drying time appr. 10hrs.

I have just installed the speakers and the rattle has disappeared and they sound just fine. I thought I just share this with you. I seem to remember that some of you had speaker distortion issues in the past. All the same, what worked for me may not work for you. But before spending money on replacing a speaker it may be worth a try. What have you got to lose?

In the past Ihave successfully repaired tears, holes and cracks in speaker excursion folds with undiluted contact glue and fabric and in the cone with undiluted PVA wood glue and fabric. Just a bit of useless info.
