  • Leslie 147 woofer rattle

    Hi Folks,

I've got a woofer that rattles badly, especially when the Db, Eb and Bb pedal tones are sounded. I removed it from the cabinet to isolate the rattle, and it's definitely the speaker. The cone is moving freely, nothings scraping when I push gently on it. The cone isn't torn. I had my 10-year-old assistant play a Db pedal with the speaker removed from the cabinet, and I was able to nearly stop the rattle by holding down at certain points around the perimeter, but made it even worse (temporarily) when pushing gently on other points.

Anyone have ideas how to deal with this? Thanks!

Which woofer is it? Jensen C15L, P15LL? Utah?

It's hard to say what's wrong without direct access to the speaker, but I do recone Leslie woofers on a regular basis.

I have seen a few cases where the spider (the round treated fabric piece at the base of the cone) has either cracked right at the voice coil or has had its glue joint fail where it's glued to the voice coil. Or there could be some small piece of debris that has found its way into the voice coil gap.

A speaker repair professional might be able to find the problem and fix it -- or recone it if it can't be fixed.

Hi David. Jensen C15L, 1973. Yeah, I'm sure it could be any number of issues that can't be diagnosed without seeing it. Any chance you're close to NYC? I'd like to avoid packing and shipping this if possible.

I was betting it was a C15L. Some Jensen C15Ls were somewhat carelessly built to begin with.

In NYC, you can take it to JR Frondelli at dBm Pro Audio Services. Or talk to Anthony Van Note at Vin-Tone. Tell them I sent you. They are both top reconers. Use whoever is more convenient. We have parts available that fit the C15L basket very well. A recone will sound as good as or better than the original.
