  • Leslie 147 inside a 710 CAB. NEED HELP !!

so... just got the leslie with a '52 C2. I will include pictures in reference to my questions below. I don't know if i should treat all these questions as separate topics - but since they are all about the Leslie, I thought i would just put them all together. I'm sure i will have more.

    1. Whoever converted the Leslie did a pretty janky wiring job going to the speaker and power. is there a way to get drawings of how it should be? on the underside of the amp - it is apparent that someone has replaced the caps at some point. one of them is only connected on one side...? again is there a way to get wiring drawings with original or the best rebuild practices?

    2. The 15" speaker is wrong... (it's an 8 ohm with no name that i can see...) What does that do to the overall performance of the Leslie?

    3. There is a small board with some wires wrapped around two post and some caps or resistors... is this the crossover?

    4. The tubes are very old - and i know that can be both good and bad. While the amp seems to work fine to me, the OC3 tube ( an old RCA) is completely loose from the base housing and moves a little if you touch it. I'm sure i need to get a tube tester for all of them. Any suggestions on what to get and what it will cost?

    5. The lower belt has a squeak that i only hear at low speed. Could it be to tight?

The Leslie amp looks completely factory stock to me. It does look like one of the arc suppression capacitors on the motor socket is damaged. Is that the one that's disconnected?

It's hard to be 100% certain from a photo of this resolution, but Leslie was using Sprague orange drop capacitors by this point. And they glued them to the chassis -- not always the best idea since I have seen the leads break at the capacitor body on orange drops.

The original Tung-Sol 6550s were better than any made today. They may still have plenty of life left in them. The 0C3 tube can be re-glued to the base.

An 8Ω woofer in a Leslie creates a kind of hole in the middle of the frequency response because it drops the woofer crossover point from 800Hz to 400Hz. It will sound much better with a 16Ω woofer.

Mechanical squeaks in Leslies can be hard to track down, even for professional Leslie techs. Sometimes the belt can pick up a layer of phenolic material from the pulleys. The belt can be washed, and it may require a brush to remove the encrusted material on the belt. It will come off. But a squeak can come from any of the connection points in the suspension of the lower drum, even rubber grommets that have shrunk.

          thanks David,

So, what should i be looking at as a possible replacement for that lower speaker? I have nothing close that i can compare it with , but it seems to me the low end is a little weak. It could be that i just want more and it sound good... who knows. Anyway, suggestions on a speaker?

Also, i've been talking to Ron about a complete set of smooth drawbars for the C2.

Haven't really missed the percussion yet - that may be a later addition but it's not bothering me at all right now.

          really appreciate the feedback!

          G

If not the Jensen P15LL, then the Weber 15A200 .

Or write Tone Tubby and ask for a JBL E130 wired to 16 ohms.

One of the stock Leslie/Utah woofers would also be a good choice, or even a Jensen C15L -- if it's in good condition.

Please send us a pic of the crossover ?

Yes that looks like the crossover.

But if the stock 710 is a bi-amped model with a 4 ohm woofer and 16 ohm horn, I don't know enough about them to say that the 710's crossover is the right one for your project swap of a 147's parts which would have both 16 ohm speakers.

it's already been done.... maybe i didn't explain that clearly.... someone has already done it... Everything in the 710 cab in from a 147.

lots of "not so great wiring and bracing, etc. And an 8 ohm speaker, which would be wrong if they did everything else right. I'm just trying to sort it all out.

Previous threads have suggested that the Jensen 16ohm 15K is the current bass speaker that sounds closest to the originals. Certainly I am very happy with one in my 147.

The crossover looks to me like one from a 122A, which uses electrolytic capacitors. Can't be sure, but that's what it looks like. If it is, it's the same basic crossover as a 122/147. Film capacitors would be an improvement.

I agree. I used some Mundorf film caps, the less expensive Mcap's in the 122rv and it did give a smoother tone with a nice ramp animation to the lower rotor over the electrolytics.

                            I realize some can't hear a difference.

I had to combine caps to get the right values though.
