A buddy of mine might be getting me a Hammond DXR-20 Cabinet. There isn't a whole lot about these things out there but it's free. I am not sure where or why there isn't an organ with it but apparently it was left in an old house about 30 minutes away from here. I saw one video on YouTube that showed it hooked up to a Model A. Is it worth it to pick this up? It's not something I'd gig with anyway but it's free.

At that price I would say definitely 'yes'! (I have a DX20)
edit:
To blather on a little further, I'm tinkering with a DX20 paired with a Leslie 21H with a MEE switch connected to a BC and CV. The DX20 seems to have a strong low end and really reinforces the 21H. Predictably, and IMHO I guess with most Hammond tone cabinets, the treble could be better. I added a JBL wide dispersion horn, D250 driver and 800 Hz crossover and now the DX20 easily competes with the Leslie on the high end. My CV seems to have a stronger low end than the BC and when I plug it in to the speakers, I'd bet that combo can be detected on seismographs. Not bad considering each cabinet is only 20 watts. If you fall upon hard times you can sell the four 2A3 triodes to an audiophile and retire 8)Last edited by tpappano; 10-03-2019, 11:18 AM.Tom in Tulsa

I've just been enjoying a few minutes alone in my shop with the neighbors gone. What a loud, distorted, glorious racket all this apparatus can produce, everything vibrating, crap falling off shelves, what fun 8)Tom in Tulsa

Without wanting to sound negative, there are some things that can be wrong with these older cabinets. They have two field-coil speakers, one with a 250 Ohm coil and the other with a 5,000 Ohm coil. The 5k coils are more fragile and can open up. The oil-tube reverb units often have bad crystal pickups. The amps will need to be rebuilt if that hasn't been done, though they are very simple. Their power transformer windings can fail. Finally 2A3 tubes are expensive audiophile niche-market items at this point in history. The separate reverb preamp will also need rebuilding. If it still has decent 2A3 tubes in it, for God's sake, don't plug it in and turn it on to see what happens. Get the amp serviced first.
Most of these things can be worked around, if you know how. For example, I'm pretty sure a later 6V6-based Type G amp could be installed in the event of major amp problems like a bad power transformer. 6V6s are still readily available.I'm David. 'Dave' is someone else's name.
