  • Digital Organ For Practice

    Hello everyone,

I am lucky enough to have unrestricted access to a "real" instrument, which I shall (of course) continue to use, but with the best will in the world it is difficult to get there as regularly as I would like to. I have not had the opportunity to play all that many digital instruments, and I'm not aware of any showrooms in my immediate vicinity where I could try out any instruments. I don't desire a lavish five manual cathedral reproduction; I would be quite happy with a modest 2 (maybe 3) manual affair, with the emphasis on quality rather than quantity.

Your posting is in the Theatre organ section, but you reference a "cathedral reproduction", so I'm not sure if you want a Theatre organ or a Classical organ.

If you want a Theatre organ, Allen is the only builder currently manufacturing electronic theatre organs. I suggest MDS models or later (Renaissance or Quantum), though the later ADC models (4500 or 4600) might be OK.

If you do want a classical organ there are many options. Tell us a little about your location and what you want in an organ.

As well as your price range, technical abilities, free time, etc. These things tend to trade off. A big budget means you can get a newer nicer organ. Better technical abilities and more free time allow you to get a more inexpensive console and fix it up the way you want.

You'll also need to consider space in your home (digital organ consoles typically take up a 5'x5' (1.5m x 1.5m) square and external speakers would also take up additional space), doorways(or windows), corridors, and stairs (that the organ would need to go through to get into your house.
