I don't know much about MIDI, and I do not play the organ, however, can an external MIDI device drive the organ in order to play music on the organ? For instance, can I interface a computer, or any other electronic device, that produces MIDI to drive the Protege organ? The organ has a device I think is called "SmatMIDI" that plays recordings generated by the organ onto a 1.44 floppy disc. I would like to use the organ as the output device for playing music.

If an organ has MIDI IN, then it should be playable from an external device. Of course you have to make sure the correct MIDI channel is used.

Thanks radagast. According to the manual, which is quite sparse, shows a diagram having two outputs and one input. So, hopefully I will be able to use the organ as the output device. As for which channel, well, I will have to learn about that.

      Thanks again.

The two MIDI outputs differ in that one is triggered by the various couplers in the organ (MIDI to Swell, MIDI to Great, etc.) while the other is constant, and not affected by the coupler switches, but is always on. Therefore, if you were hooking up an exteral module that had its own tab switches, such as the Ahlborn units, you would not need to turn on, say, Midi to Great. Also, you use the constantly on MIDI output for recording into a sequencer. The owners manual will tell you what the output channels are. If not, it is not hard to determine them. Set the external unit to receive channel one, and see which keyboard triggers it, then do the same with channel two, and channel three.

My home organ is a Theatre III with an MDS II MIDI Expander.
I also have an MDC 10 Theatre spinet.
