  • Wurlitzer 950 vs Conn 650

I in in market for a good theater organ. I have two options both are for sale at reasonable prices in my area under $300.00 and both in good working condition.
Conn 650 or Wurlitzer 950. Which would be the better option

I can't speak for the Conn 650 but I have a Wurlitzer 960 organ. I got it second hand for a reasonable price. I needed to do some repairs on it a couple of times. It was made in the mid to late 1978. All the parts for the Wurlitzer are available from Morelock's Organ Parts and Service in Rienzi, Mississippi. They even have the service manuals are also are very helpful. It does have a 1/4 stereo headphone jack and also a switch for practice or performance mode. The working are LSI ICs. The organ weighs about 400 pounds and the pedalboard does detach. According to Moreloxk's, they said to me that the 950 was probably one of the best that Wurlitzer made and that I have a really good organ. To be honest, there will be parts that will need attention. Just my opinion though.

The 650 has an AGO pedalboard, the 950 has 25 notes--may or may not matter to you. The Conn uses individual oscillators, so it has more sense of ensemble.I suspect there are no too many, if any, IC's in the 650. My preference would the the 650--but that's preference.

If you're looking for theatre organ type sounds, it's got to be the Conn. The 950 makes some very good sounds, but it's not true theatre organ in tone. The older Wurlitzers were better at doing that.

The 650 has a 61 note. fully polyphonic solo manual. The 950 has a 25 note monophonic synth as its third manual.

There are some exclusive bits in the 950, particularly the Orbit synth. There's absolute nothing custom in the 650.
It's not what you play. It's not how you play. It's the fact that you're playing that counts.
