Hello everyone,
Back in '02 someone passed on their 1979 Kimball Stardust K600 (Theatre-Style) with an additional Kimball speaker cabinet to me for home use. When we got it, some things were a little crackly and the pedals were dead. We had a repairman take a look at it, and after about an hour, he got it back into full song. It's served me well since then; despite its age, you can really get some beautiful sounds out of it. Lately it has started to go downhill again[U]; the pedals below high G often cut out, the percussions cipher at E below middle c and also lowest G.
So I could deal with that, being mainly a church organist I didn't need the percussions much. This morning I started playing and now the tibias, strings, and clarinet cipher on the Solo Eb above middle C. For some reason, the brass voices are fine. The cipher only occurs when I draw the stops for the affected Solo voices. The funny thing is that the Special Effects(the Kimball name for tuned percussions) don't cipher on the Eb and the other voices don't cipher on the low E. I read something on an eBay posting about the K600s having a four-channel system, so would that mean Tibia, Strings, and Diapason are one channel, Pedal on another, Reeds and Rhythm on a third, and Special Effects on the fourth?
Also, on that ciphering Eb, the action feels different from the other ones. On other keys, you can feel the contact touching, but this one just feels dead. However, it will still play the brass and the percussion. Did the Kimballs have multiple key contacts like the Hammond B3s etc did?
Is there a quick fix I can do, or do I have to call a tech? I hope I'm not over-explaining myself, I'm just worried about my baby.
Thank you all for your help,
Philip
