  • When you add a comment it doesn't show up on any lists

While I find the comment feature of the new forum software an interesting way to add to a thread, it doesn't seem to show up on any lists. Not on "Today's Posts" or when you click on "My recent posts" in the login dropdown.

So it seems that unless someone is reading a thread because a new "regular" response has been posted and it is on a list, any comments added to a post are essentially lost to new readers. Maybe it's my vanity showing here but when I take the time to add something to a thread, especially an older one, it would be nice to know that someone has a chance to read it if the topic is of interest to them.

    Am I missing something here?

Same here. And when I get notified of a comment, I lose track of which posts I've read, the whole thread seems to get marked read.

      Larry,

If you have your settings set to auto-subscribe to a thread when you post, then a comment will trigger a post in the New Topic list. If you're not subscribed, I don't believe it will show up. Admin can confirm or deny.

        • Comments show up in the New Topics list. No subscription necessary. You can distinguish posts from comments in this list as new posts appear in boldface type and the comments in regular.
        • New comments show up in the subscription notification list for those topics and forums subscribed to.
        • Reading anything in a topic marks that topic as read and removes any notifications for that topic whether or not there are other unread elements in that topic.
        • Your own posts and comments may not appear in the New Topics or subscription notifications because they are not new to you.
        • Lists may be cached which means that new posts and comments may not appear immediately but should eventually show up when the cache is refreshed. I'm seeing comments I made today in my profile's list of my recent posts. Click image for larger version

        • The Latest Activity view decouples comments from posts and presents the topic in strict reverse chronological order. You can choose this view from the tab at the top of the topic or forum or make it your default by editing your settings.
        • Use of comments is entirely optional.

Thanks for the extensive explanations but I still don't understand what is going on. This AM after I started up my computer with a clean browser cache I went to the Forum and, without logging in, clicked on "Today's Posts." Both of the threads I started yesterday showed up but the comment I made on the thread "Notre Dame in Paris on Fire" did not.

Then I logged in and clicked on "New Topics" and did not see my own posts - as expected. I clicked on "Today's Posts" and saw both of the threads I started because others had posted responses, not comments. My comment on the Notre Dame thread does not show up.

My take away from all of this is to avoid using the comments feature in the future if I want others to see that I posted a reply (on a list) and be able to see a list of my recent posts. Clearly the system deals with comments on posts entirely differently than it does responses to posts.

The caching I referred to is on the server, your browser cache is not involved with this.

Take New Posts and My Recent Posts literally. Comments are not posts.

Your Notre Dame comment showed up in New Topics when I logged on earlier this morning. As I subscribe to this Forum, it also was in my Notifications subscription list. I also see it in your profile under your Activities tab

You should never be notified of your own posts. The system only shows you posts that you haven't read. You read your post when you wrote it.

The only caveat to what your statement, is what I've observed:

                * I log into the Forum>Notifications.
                * In the Notifications panel, I open all threads listed in a new window/tab for each, to catch up with the threads.
                * Immediately, I click on New Posts to see if there's anything new in which I'm interested and open those in a new window/tab.
                * I immediately click on Forums, go to the bottom and Mark All Channels Read.

Only then do I open the windows/tabs with each post in them and read/respond/comment.

Before I log off, I check again to see what's listed in New Topics, and invariably, threads I've commented on as well as those I've posted on show up again. I then Mark All Channels Read in the Forums tab again immediately before I log off. This process makes sure I don't miss anything.

That said, however, I certainly do understand when someone has made a comment to a post 5-6 posts before the end, and I'm left searching for the change. I've found, however, that when I open the thread in a new window, the Forum takes me immediately to the approximate location of the updated comment, rather than to the end.

Works for me, and I hope it helps for you.

This is what my browser showed after I posted the above comment using the method I described. Both my comments in different threads showed up in the New Posts list.
