Someone sent me a private message, but I believe that he does not realize that he needs to view his inbox in order to see my reply. Is the administrator able to someone notify him that a message is in his inbox?

Re: Private messages
Not every time...

I've had a few slip thru which I found by accident!

It's a shame your chap hasn't listed their email address on their profile.

Perhaps you could post a new thread with their name at the top, saying "Mr X, check out your private messages!"

Cheers,

Re: Private messages
Okay . . . I agree that this system is a just a tad less than flawless.

For anyone whochoosesremainannonymous, yet still connected with this forum; it only takes a few minutes to set up a hotmail account to deal with such issues.
2008: Phoenix III/44

Re: Private messages
The way I understand it, the system will only send an e-mail notification in a private thread to the recipient of the first PM in a private thread. Any subsequent followups posted will not trigger an e-mail notification to the recipient. But the admin posted in another thread about this that if both users subscribe to the thread, then all messages posted to the private thread will trigger e-mail notifications.

The way I have dealt with this was to send an e-mail to the recipient. Just because an e-mail address isn't publicly visible on the profile doesn't mean it does not exist -I believe you must provide an e-mail address to set up an forum account in the first place. In the "contact" drop-down box in a message posted by the person you want to contact, the first option should say "send an e-mail to ..." so you can try that - unless there is some way for the user to configure his account to disable this feature?? The admin will know for sure.

Re: Private messages
Hi Jim!

The problem is that by starting or replying to a thread you should be automaticallysubscribed to it. It looks like that's not always happening on the odd PM......

Another thing to query is about the search engine. Should we all be be adding Tags and things to each new post to help there? Usually when you're writing it's with immediate things in mind rather than being able to find it again in the future!

For that matter, should we be adding tags to our pics?

When I put pics up here or on photobucket I'mtrying to illustrate something here NOW, I'm never thinking of chaps in the future googling for eg. the schematic of the T series percussion PCB....

Cheers!

Re: Private messages
Well, no. I don't agree that you should automatically be subscribed to a thread when you post or reply to one. Receiving email notifications should be an explicit choice. But I would agree that would be more acceptable for private messages.

Yes, you can send an email to anyone who posts to the forum by selecting that option from the Contact button in their post. It will be sent to their hidden email address.

Yes, tagging your posts and photoscertainly helps to make this forum a more useful resource.

As foremail messages and notificationssent from theForum not being received, I can only say that this is a completely automated process, and if it fails it's more likely tobe due to a factor outside of theForum, rather than theforum process itself. All failed mail attempts are sent to me andalthough there are far too many returns tolook at each and every one, most of them are due tobad email addresses, over limit mailboxes, and spam filters.

Thanks for everyone's comments.
