  • Forum Problems

Yesterday the forum did not display in it's format. Only line items appeared to access the site. Last night the format returned but the site will no longer retain my login information and the notification column on the right side of the screen will no longer disappear when clicking the close button. I also cannot send PMs. I replied to one from jbird and it totally disappeared! Thanks, Allen

We were making changes yesterday to support the https protocol in order to make the site more secure. This caused some transient problems while the changes were being made and everything should be back to normal today.

You can now either access the site using either http: or https: protocols. (http://www.organforum/forums/ or https://www.organforum/forums) but because some of the content is displayed through http: links, that content may be blocked by your browser causing some of the issues you mentioned. Your browser will indicate when this occurs by an icon in your address bar. In Chrome, it's a shield icon with a line through it. For FireFox the padlock icon to the left of the address bar will have a yellow triangle imposed on it. For Edge, there's an icon of a webpage with a shield imposed on it. You usually can override such blocks by clicking on these icons.

Unfortunately, as companies such as Google are aggressively attempting to make the Internet more secure by encouraging users to use the more secure https: protocol by the use of warning pop-ups, they are also creating a dilemma for users and site operators as many of the underlying services and scripts that are in use behind the scenes are only available through http which they block, for security reasons, on https pages.

For the Organ Forum, the only real security concern is your password when you sign, but as the sign-in is in the masthead, there is no way to avoid using https: Forum wide rather than just on a sign-in page. Changing this for this site would require a major rework of the software.

My advice for this site is to use the common http: protocol and avoid the potential problems of https: until the Internet as a whole adopts the https: everywhere idea.

Clear your browser history, explicitly enter http://www.organforum.com/forums in your address bar to get you back on track, and you should have no further difficulties.

If you're concerned about security, use https: but be prepared for some glitches, most of which can be overcome by telling your browser to allow unsecure content as described above. Even though the browser will say the site is no longer secure when you do that, it is still more secure than when using http:.

Admin, thanks for your help. Everything works except my reply to jbird's PM about 90 minutes ago. Can't find it. Can you retrieve it? Thanks, Allen

How do you know he didn't receive it? PM's that you send are not saved by default in your Sent Messages folder.

        http://www.organforum.com/forums/sho...my-Sent-Folder

Also keep in mind, that PM's will not be received if the recipient's mailbox is full.

I have no ability to track or read PM's without circumventing the privacy protections in place.

At this point I don't know if John received my reply, however in the past a copy has been saved in my sent folder.

I reviewed your instructions under my settings and they are set for a copy to go to my sent folder. These are my original settings and I have not turned off anything, however a copy did not save today.

I'd send it again and see what happens.
