GEM Prelude Problem

HI! I'm a new organist, and I just got a GEM Prelude electric organ. When I turned it on the other day to practice, it made a loud "crack" noise through the speakers. Now, only the three small treble speakers work, and not the bass speakers. This is the case if I'm using the headphone jack or not, so I'm assuming that it's not the speakers, but some part of the electronics. I've contacted General Music Corp. (What GEM turned into) for a users manual, but I don't have it yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Is this an instrument with vacuum tubes? I'm not sure. Thanks!

The Prelude is a solid state product, so it is realized with transistors and IC components and no with vacuum tubes.</p>

The woofer amplifier is the same as the mid range amplifier.

The box on the right is a midi box that I've realized to connect this beautiful instrument to the magic of Midi and sampled sounds.</p>

I use MyOrgan (it' s a software) that permits to play the instrument with sampled sounds from organs of famous places in all the world.</p>

Thanks for your reply! When you say that the woofer amplifier is the same as the midrange amplifier, do you mean that they're actually the same component in the organ? In the drawing that you posted, it looks like they are two separate things. If I manage to find a replacement part, do you think it will be easy to install? I'm not too experienced with electronics. Hi Dave,


as you can see the amplifier is divided in two parts:
midrange and woofer.
This means that the components are the same but are
mounted in two separate PCB (Printed Circuit Board)
May be that some components
in the woofer PCB can have different values from the Midrange diagram, but I
don't think so.

The PCB numbers are the same (73026), so I suppose that the
components values are identically.

I think that is not easy (and not safely for
you and for the instrument too :) to try to repair it by yourself.
Consider the
high voltage 62V in the circuit.
At first you need to measure several points
when it's powered on, and
the voltage may be dangerous: don't touch components
without precautions and competence.

I suggest you to call an electronic
assistance (tv/radio service) and explain the problem:
with the diagram and
with their competence is possible an easy and safety solution.
It's no
different than an 'old' TV/Radio amplifier...
They will substitute the
components damaged with the same kind that they'll find in the PCB.
In my
opinion a 'good' candidates is the final transistor,
but only the
measurement can certify my idea. if you need a better version of the complete
Prelude manual,
tell me your @mail so I can send you a zip file (5Mb).
