Re: KIMBAL SWINGER 1000
Hi Roaslie

Batteries? Are we talking about the 1967 Kimball Swinger 1000 spinet organ? If so, what batteries are you talking about? Where did you 'find' them. Photo or two would help. Or are you talking about fuses?

A dead 1967 Kimball could be dead for a number of reasons. Power supply problems being perhaps the most likely and that could result in blown fuses. With respect, if you may not know a fuse from a battery (I hope I'm wrong and apologise if I've misjudged you!) then you are best advised not to do too much inside the organ without professional help (which would cost much more than the organ is worth). There are lethal voltages in there.

Let us know what you mean and we'll try to offer some help.

Andy

Re: KIMBAL SWINGER 1000
HI

NO NEED TO APOLOGIZE, I DO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE,LOL I WAS GETTING FRUSTRATED TRYING TO POST SORRY. IT IS FUSES I AM ASKING ABOUT, AND I DID FIND 2 IN THE LOWER PART OF THE ORGAN AND REPLACED THEM HOW EVER IT STILL IS DEAD. MY BIG PROBLEM IS I LIVE IN GODS COUNTRY IN NORTHERN MINNESOTA AND NO ONE WITH IN A HUNDRED MILES (OR MORE) WORKS ON ORGANS, I THOUGHT IF THERE IS MORE FUSES, LIKE ON EACH LEVEL PERHAPS I COULD GET IT GOING. WOW THANKS FOR ANSWERING SO FAST.

Re: KIMBAL SWINGER 1000
Rosalie, I've just parted two kimballs from my neighborhood this past summer. Both had capacitors on some of the boards that were leaking and dead. As Andy mentioned, you don't want to get involved in resurrecting this organ. And the hardest part of troubleshooting the Kimball is that two boards require the person doing service to have a ground wrist strap. My not paying attention to the warnings on those two boards probably led to the demise of Kimball #2 in my work.

I've also just finished a very frustrating project that ended in the failure of bringing back a dead Yamaha. I'm sorry to be pessimistic, but many of these organs are dying these days and your funds would be better spent replacing the organ. If you or a friend own a truck -- even a pickup will do for a spinet -- travel when you can to a less remote area and purchase something nice from a thrift store!

Re: KIMBAL SWINGER 1000
OR4ME is quite right.

If those fuses haven't fixed the problem, and the organ is truly dead, then the problems almost certainly in the power supply and those capacitors would be my first thought too. That's right where the lethal voltages are. Get things wrong and the results could be devastating.

So, if you're not 110% certain about what you're doing, and don't have the schematics you'll need, then please play safe and let this organ go. I appreciate that you're 'out in the sticks' as we say in the UK, but take heed of OR's advice and look for something newer (and probably better) when you can. The good news is that you'll pick the organ up for free, or next to nothing these days.
