  • amp for moss11 organ

Is an M2 amp compatible with a 632-3 manual organ

  • #2
    Jwl5151,

To my knowledge, no. The MOS-1 organ used mostly S-100 amplifiers. There are a couple of other amplifiers that could have been used, but you'll need to wait for the experts to weigh in.

Meanwhile, try reading this thread: https://organforum.com/forums/forum/...mplifier-codes. Hope this helps.

Way too many organs to list, but I do have 5 Allens:
    • MOS-2 Model 505-B / ADC-4300-DK / ADC-5400 / ADC-6000 (Symphony) / ADC-8000DKC
    • Lowrey Heritage (DSO-1)
    • 11 Pump Organs, 1 Pipe Organ & 7 Pianos

The early years of MOS-1 organ production used the T-50 amplifier from the analog organ era. It has the additional preamp stage to be compatible with the low output levels of those tone generation systems. Allen has a history of introducing new organ technologies but not new amplifier models until later in the production of that organ series. After the T-50 (and T-20) era, the AM-100, D-40 and S-100 amplifiers all were built with the high gain preamp stage.

Since the D-40 and S-100 were used in multiple generations of organs, they were eventually made without the preamp stage and used on ADC organs (which have a normal line level output from the tone generators) until the ADC model amplifier came out.

The link to John's post about Allen amplifier codes will help you pick a compatible product if you buy a used unit on ebay. There are several T-50s posted as I write this and multiple S-100s in various forms are usually listed for sale. Be aware than any of these amps may need new power supply caps to operate without audible hum. Age takes its toll and some of these units will be 40-50 years old.

Also, these earlier model amplifiers used a Jerrold Type C input connector for the audio input, which is no longer available. They are smaller with a finer thread than the Type F connectors used with cable TV. So if your organ has coax cables that fed the amps, they most likely had these old style connectors on the end unless someone updated them.

The M2 amp is a relatively recent product and was never available in a model with the preamp stage. I have had luck using a Radio Design Labs STM-1 Stick-On microphone preamp on my analog theater organ to then connect it to an amplifier expecting standard line level in. I found mine on ebay for less than the price of new ones.

        Larry,

Did you mean the D-40 or T-50 instead of D-50? I know Allen used some of them instead in the earlier organs.

Thanks for catching that typo Michael. I've corrected my original post and clarified some statements.
