  • Wurlitzer 4075 R (I humbly request your assistance)

I have 2 Wurlitzer 4075 R Organs one is in good condition and plays fine (except for a key here or there that sits lower than the others)

But what i would like a little advice/guidance on is the other one. It belonged to my grandmother and was damaged over the years. I've been looking for a service manual for years but with no luck. The second organ i purchased last year off eBay to attempt to repair the first. i thought i could use it as a reference/parts.

The problems with the organ in question.
    • Keys stick down and continue playing notes until pulled back up.
    • Pedals are... weird. something has happened that after you play a note on the pedals a few of them when pressed will (copy) the last note played on them.
    • The motor for the speaker that spins has long since given up. it doesn't have the power to spin it anymore.
    • The percussion buttons sometimes work but most of the time do not.

I know what happened to damage this organ. We had kittens and they would lay on the organ keys. but they got fleas and as any cat owner will know they drop little drops of blood this got all in the keys of the organ. but the real problems started when my grandmother tried to clean it using 91% alcohol. i have used it to clean circuit boards many times in the past so it in and of itself didn't damage the organ but when it dissolved the gunk down under the keys that's when everything started acting up.

If you have any information on the disassembly of these organs or know where i can find/purchase a repair/service manual any information would be much appreciated.

With my background in computer repair and IT i have no issues with taking it apart, but this is so far beyond my understanding. These were made with different technology that i do not understand the inner workings of. i need the assistance of someone much older than i that grew up with this technology and knows how it works, someone that i can pick their brain and bounce questions off of.

Most of the issues i'm sure can be solved with disassembling the keyboard and cleaning it thoroughly, But if there are any damaged components i would not know which components control what. This is where i need assistance.

This is not my organ but is identical in every way.

I promised my grandmother I would find a way to fix this organ for her, and come hell or high water i will keep that promise. Even more so since her passing. Any assistance you may be able to offer would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time.

    • Keys stick down and continue playing notes until pulled back up.
      • That's mechanical... just get to the keys and clean up the hinges... I have a 4075 but haven't done this, shouldn't be all that hard to figure out as these organs pretty much just screw together one way or another.
    • Pedals are... weird. something has happened that after you play a note on the pedals a few of them when pressed will (copy) the last note played on them.
      • Not sure what you mean.
    • The motor for the speaker that spins has long since given up. it doesn't have the power to spin it anymore.
      • Did you check the belt? More often the belt is loose and stiff and the motor just spins in place.
    • The percussion buttons sometimes work but most of the time do not.
      • Ignore this one for now. 😅

1 could be key hinges or a broken spring. Either way makes sense to open it up to see what's going on
2 Some organs have monophonic pedals, which mean they only play one note at a time. This coupled with contacts that are shorting may cause the problem you are seeing. Again, the way to troubleshoot this is to disassemble and take a look. Consider treating the contacts with Deoxit D5.
3 On a rotating speaker, it could be many things, but the most common is it has to be cleaned and lubricated. As mentioned, a stiff or broken belt could be at fault. Sometimes the electric motors get dead spots in the winding and the motor gets stuck in that spot. Still, first step is disassemble, clean and lubricate, and see if that fixes the problem.
4 Any buttons that work intermittently are probably a contact issue. A little bit of Deoxit D5 will probably take care of it.

        All,

Parts of this organ look strikingly similar to the Lowrey DSO. Was it made by Lowrey, or did they source the same parts? If it is assembled with the same/similar parts, and used the same/similar action mechanisms, etc., you can probably look at some of the Lowrey DSO threads on the Forum to obtain information regarding how to fix various issues.

        I hope this helps.
