  • Cantorum II - No sound

Hi new to forum wanted to get advice on an issue with this old keyboard.

Went to turn it on the other day and no sounds were working / only the 16' Bourdon on the accompaniment would switch on but no sound.

As the unit is getting on in age suspected a capacitor issue and don't seem to be disappointed in that suspicion !

My question is not being experienced in electronic but willing to try and replace (can solder) is it worth a try replacing parts as concerned about damage to the chips.... ?

Seem to need to replace 2x diodes (no markings for values) 1x resistor 1 x capacitor.

    Thanks
    Andrew

I wonder if that button-style battery is actually what leaked? I've not seen that happen, but I don't see another source for the material on the board. I'd take the battery off the board and thoroughly clean that area. Maybe nothing is actually damaged. I don't know how caustic the stuff would be coming out of a lithium cell like that.

      Andy,

I'm a bit lost. How will solder in a can make a difference. Solder is solder.

In any event, I concur with John, in that it looks like the battery cell leaked, and puddled around the capacitors. Somewhere here there's a thread on how someone cleaned a logic board which had been the recipient of a leaky battery. However, I don't believe the battery was Lithium, though. Do they even make those batteries in NiCad or NiMH?

I think what they mean by (can solder) is that they know how to solder. The way it looks to me is that there is damage around the two diodes. I never saw a Lithium battery leak but I did see one explode (not pretty).

Hi thanks for the suggestions , I'll search for the logic board cleaning thread. It could be the battery as I now recall it had no charge when I tested it with the multimeter, it's soldered to the board.

Sorry wasn't clear in my initial message I mean I am confident to solder in new components but my electronics knowledge is basic at best !

          Thanks Andrew
