• Dayton OH Pipe Tech Needed

Hi Folks: Here is an odd situation, I have a clock with a
barrel organ pipe organ mechanism in the bottom, in need of
restoration. It is a single rank (!), 13 pipe unit, with a pin
barrel that tracks a valve box with seven lateral positions in
sequence--similar to a music box that plays multiple melodies, but this
plays all seven just to complete one melody. I need a pipe tech
to complete, or replace, the 13 pipes because only six remain, and
rebuild the tracker valve box. Also the barrel pins need to be
decoded first just to make sure what the 13 notes are! For your
amusement I will try to post some photos of my project. PLEASE
ADVISE any tips you may have on locating an appropriate person to take
this on. Thanks! Chas in Dayton

    A couple thoughts...

Since this is more of a clock than a pipe organ, I would probably consult a master clock repairer first. If they repair large, publicclocks they should have the know-how to do the necessary mechanical repairs.

My assumption: a clock repairer would have more experience with mechanized musicalinstruments than an organbuilder.

Since you need to replicate some organ pipes, you could also contact one of the organ firms in your vicinity. If you need some names, we should be able to provide some...

Finally, since this looks like a very interesting antique you might consider contacting the conservators at a local museum. Theyshould have access to restoration resources and may be able to assist you or make recommendations.

    Good luck.

Unfortunately, the only person I know who has experience in such matters is in New Zealand. His name is Johnathan White and he has a fabulous collection of mechanical musical instrument, all of which he restored himself. (He's also a very fine artist and has a web page of his pictures.)

        Greetings,

Congratulations on such a great project! I would definitely reccommend getting in touch with Curt Mangel, the curator of the Wanamaker organ in Philadelphia, PA. Curt was also the curator of the Sanfilippo collection, which is probably the largest collection of mechanical musical instruments anywhere I would think; if anyone in the US knows what to do - he's your man.

Here are some pics of that collection:

http://www.arcadianclock.com/dru/sanfilippo/

     Best,

           Nathan

<><>Thanks all for the inputs. I am primarily concerned about
finding a competent, hopefully local, tech who could craft new pipes,
and rebuild the mini (micro?) chest. I used to work for Julian
Bully, 'Toledo Pipe Organ' here in Dayton in my college years, but he
is gone as is his business. I had grand times with him, traveling
all over the midwest, living in cabins in the mountains and performing
the manual labor for his church instrument restorations, living off of
fried chicken and apple pie delivered regularly by assorted blue-haired
church ladies. Ah, the days of my mis-spent youth. But I
digress. I'm hoping to discover that there is a Julian
reincarnate somewhere close that I can consult with. I will of
course follow the kind suggestions offered so far. This forum
certainly is an amazing repository of arcana. --Chas

I just happened to see your question while browsing around the internet. You may have solved all your problems but if not you may to be able to get some help from: http://www.rainboworgan.com/

I think Larry Stofer (link to his site and email above) may be able to help you out.

Also C. Pat McClelland who worked closely with my father, Julian E Bulley, in Dayton until the company closed may be able to assist you. He took over many of the Toledo Pipe Organ maintenance contracts when we closed.

A while ago there was someone near Troy OH who had a collection of literally hundreds of mechanical organs - everthing from dance hall organs to music boxes and etc etc. I don't know what happened with that collection. Maybe Larry or Pat would have some contacts.

Good luck and it is nice to know of someone who remembers my Dad!

              Hi Charley,

I worked for Mr. Bulley for over 20 years and live in Dayton. Your name seems very familiar and we all might have taken a trip to North CarolinatogetherAs Julian would say, "At any rate", I have my own organ building business and couldcould do the restoration. Also in town is C. Pat McClelland who has his own organ business. Below is my website

              Cheers,
