• Chest Question

I am currently installing a 4 rank chest that uses direct electric at the upper end (2 octaves) and electro-pneumatic for all the other pipes.

Everything is working well, except there is small amounts of air escaping at the upper direct electric end on various notes.

If I let the pipe sit normally it has a slight cypher. If I felt the pipe in the rack and pull it up a bit, it does not sound unless that note is played. So basically it works well however is this the best solution, or is there some kind of adjustment I can do on the magnet/pallet so it closes completely?

    Thank you

    Re: Chest Question

The valves may not be sealing properly due to misalignment, warn pivot, or hardened leather due to moisture or water damage. Also rust or other dirt in the mechanism. If a thin gauze or felt at the pipe toe stops the problem and the speech is ok then problem solved. One trick I have used is to apply a vacuum at the toehole to pull the pallet more tightly and better reform the leather. Maybe some of the experts have a way of softening the leather. Otherwise change the valves. Replacements should have the same resistance as the old ones and same pallet diameters. Many of us have extras so let us know your needs. Curious what's the rank and wind pressure?

          Cymbell,

Did you "blow" out the chest before planting pipes? There could be some trash under the valves where they seat on the bottom of the toe boards. You might take those pipe that cypher and work the key (valve) for a minute. And if you are careful you can insert a very small rod through the toe hole and very, very carefully move the valve in a circular motion. Sometime that will re-seat the valve and stop the leaking. This is a common problem with older DE chest. Worse case....drop the bottom board and glue a NEW piece of leather to the valve that's leaking but as mentioned before you might can increase the tension on the spring. Good luck!!!!
