Looks like Grace Cathedral is being rebuilt by Schoenstine. This explains why the Bombarde Division is being replaced. The Cathedral also states it will compleat the specification as origionaly planned. I have no Idea what was not installed but am very curious to find out.

It seems the roofs over the two chambersare in danger of collapsing. So the Cathedral is undertaking a huge rebuilding project. The project will also compleat theribbed vaulting at thecrossing and seal the guastavino tile in the quire

The entier project will cost $4 million.

Jeffrey Smith is there, no surprise they're going with Schoenstein after he got the one at St. Paul's K Street.

      Some historical background

The original edifice was apparently a victim of the 1906 quake in frisco

at some point a lower section was built or possibly a chapel actually with an aeolian organ

in the 30s a new space was begun

      skinner sold the job

the authorities wrote in the contract that mr g donald harrison would supervise it

skinner was livid by all accounts as there was a rivalry

it has been said he tried in vain to remove that stipulation to no avail

the organ was a beautiful work and had preps for a high pressure diapason chorus in the solo ala yale

in the 50s gdh made some alterations tonally

circa 1968 the console shell was retained and a new 5m fitted by another firm with plans for selestial and other ancilliary sections

in the 70s 2 new divisions were added by a canadian outfit

later a curator made tonal modifications thinning out the uniosn diapason tone on the gt to one such stop and subbing lesser profound tonalities using some pipes from other sources

the present work seems to be an effort to restore more closely to the original possibly excepting the gallery section

      my question

the bombarde that appears on the new console but is disconnected

      even if it is non-blending

      not to second guess anyone

but in a situation where something is an addition rather than in lieu of some historical or more important tonal element would there be any real harm to retain the 1973 addition hi up above the altar in its own case and if need be revoice it to more compatable tone with the rest of the organ?

        Re: Grace Cathedral

I think the chief complaint has been one of the extraordinary difficulty of accessing the Bombarde division for tuning and maintenance.

Some people think the Bombarde's soundisincompatible withthe rest of the organ; other people think it adds much needed 'oomph'.

Either way, if it is out of tune nobody will like it.

The Bombarde is for sale. $60,000 I think.

I'm more interested in the additions that were never carried out. What were they? And I can't wait to see the crossing compleated.

prep for solo hi pressure chorus like octave 4 and fourniture V or more ranks all on 10'' wind

yale has a chorus on 15'' wind in the solo and starts with a double unison diapason 8 of wood 2 rks up thru mixture

Actually, Schoenstein relocated to Benicia; their chestsuse thepatented 'expansion cell' technology.

These specs are not original 1934s. The original had a Diapason III on the great instead of the Gemshorn which was revised in 1952. Also the sale was handled by EMS in 1934 and though GDH was supervisor of the job by contractual requirment even HE didnt have baroque tops yet like the Sifflote 1 in the Choir. The spec is probabaly 1952ish.
