• Alice Tully Hall: Newly Renovated, But Where Is The Organ?

Does anyone know what's become of the Kuhn organ that was installed in Alice Tully Hall in 1975? I remember seeing pictures of the organ being

dismantled and put in storage, but I've heard nothing about it since. The newly renovated Tully Hallis receiving great reviews for its dramatic new look

and outstanding acoustics, but I haven't read a word about the organ.

To be honest, I never liked the Kuhn organ; the sound was thin and undernourished for my taste. Are there plans for a new organ? Will Lincoln Center ever

    have a great pipe organ?

I found some answersto my questions concerning the fate of the Tully Hall organ in a recent New York Times articleentitled "At Tully Hall, Worry Over the Pipe Organ's Return."

Reading the piece, one thing seems clear: reinstalling the Kuhn organ is not a major priority. Thank goodness Paul Jacbos, the brilliant young chairman of the Juilliard School's organ department, has become a very outspoken advocate for the return of the organ. . He wants it up and running ASAP! You can read the article at:

Speaking of Paul Jacobs, Ifinally had the chance to hear him in recital this past Sundayin San Francisco at Davies Symphony Hall on the massive Ruffatti concert organ. Hejust may be the greatest organist ever. I'll write about his performance in the BestOrganists of Todayforum later.
