Re: Hammond Castle organ specs

Barry Norris, in Birmingham, AL, has a 200 rank organ in his home, and there is a man in Arizona (Phoenix, I think) who has a Midmer-Losh of 160-some ranks in his home. The Hammond Castle organ may have been the largest residence organ at one time, but I think it's been surpassed.

Evidently the console has been nuked, which makes me wonder how much has been done to get/keep the organ playing lately. There's a close-up shot of the console on the following site:

        http://frank.harvard.edu/~jason/summer2002/castle/

Funny how the digital crap doesn't help much when 1,000's of leather pouches are bursting, and yet it always seems to be the first thing to happen.

          Sad but true.

I wonder who came up with the great idea ofadding all that solid state claptrap on it.

You'd think that one level of memory would be plenty, considering all the pistons that it has - and the likelyhood that it is not played very much (I'm just making assumptions about that though).

            Re: Hammond Castle organ specs

The Ernest M Skinner & Son firm founded in 1935 in Methuen, Mass continued to be family -run till 1951 when during the manufacture of a V-manual job in New York State the company was unable to complete it owing to financial problems and so Carl Basset bought out the firm. He operated it I believe from Florida and then sold it when he retired

. When I read that the chests for the Washington Cathedral job in 1973-76 were made by Ernest M. Skinner CoI contacted the president Kim Boulton. He was located in New Hampshire and was very wealthy and sponsored many of Diane Bish's programs abroad.

He was contracted for additions to the Aeolian-Skinner at Church of the Epiphany in Washington DC. He mentioned to me that his firm was building a new knob console for Hammond Castle. Needless to say that deal fell through as did the firm. So the Austin console is still there.
