  • Piano and Organ Duets

For every instrument I learn, at some point my mom and I put together a duet with my mom on piano. I'm about 4 years into learning the organ and last week my mom asked me what piano/organ duet we should learn. I didn't have any ideas so I thought I would ask the forum.

I've explored musicnotes.com and imslp.org a bit. They seem to have a good collection of organ/piano duets. Does anyone know of any other sources for duets?

Are there any recommendations for particularly fun organ/piano duets?

There are a handful of piano concertos that my mom has wanted to learn. If we did a concerto, what are some tips for arranging the accompaniment (piano or orchestra) part for organ?

I bought some piano/organ arrangements when I went to a national AGO convention a few years back. I've packed a lot of my music for the upcoming move but I found three that were at the top of the box.

      - Elegy for Organ and Piano Opus 24 by Gabriel Faure transcribed by Virginia Andrews (amusingly, it has pipe organ AND Hammond registrations)

      - Clair de Lune by Claude Debussy arranged for organ and piano by William Reddick (also with Hammond registration!)

      - 1st Arabesque by Claude Debussy arranged for organ and piano by Louis Hollingsworth (pipe organ registration only)

If I find any others I'll post an update.
Larry is my name; Allen is an organ brand. Allen RMWTHEA.3 with RMI Electra-Piano; Allen 423-C+Gyro; Britson Opus OEM38; Steinway AR Duo-Art 7' grand piano, Mills Violano Virtuoso with MIDI; Hammond 9812H with roll player; Roland E-200; Mason&Hamlin AR Ampico grand piano, Allen ADC-5300-D with MIDI, Allen MADC-2110.

What grade level of organ/piano duets are you looking for Samibe? The E.Power Biggs arrangements of 'Jesu Joy' and 'Sheep May Safely Graze' are favorites of mine. A particular peeve is that the organ part is usually of a lower grade level than the piano part unless the arranger has considerable organ experience. My experience runs towards the Sacred repertoire. The two pieces I mentioned by name kind of transcend a label. The rest of the stuff I am acquainted with doesn't really work outside of a church setting. I do know of arrangements of Handel things like the "Water Music" arranged for piano/organ. Who knows there might be some Scott Joplin out there...

          Sam,

I have hundreds of piano/organ duets. It would help to narrow it down to a style (i.e. classical or sacred), as well as an ability level. I won't be able to spend too much time making a list, but I can send you a copy of the Excel file which has many of them listed, the book they're in, etc.

Best of luck with your endeavor.

Way too many organs to list, but I do have 5 Allens:
          • MOS-2 Model 505-B / ADC-4300-DK / ADC-5400 / ADC-6000 (Symphony) / ADC-8000DKC
          • Lowrey Heritage (DSO-1)
          • 11 Pump Organs, 1 Pipe Organ & 7 Pianos

I'm not exactly sure what level I'm at or what scale to use. On the Henle scale I'm probably a 6. I can learn, and have learned, more difficult pieces (7 and 8) it just takes longer. My mom is at least an 8. She can sight read stuff that would take me a few weeks to work out.

As far as genre goes, I'm open (classical, sacred, orchestral, Christmas, movie soundtrack arrangements, etc.). We're mainly looking for something fun and/or cool.

I will look into the pieces that you all have suggested (and any others added to the thread).

Michael, I would appreciate a copy of your spreadsheet.

So, it looks like my grade level guess was a bit of a turn-off. :->

Leisesturm, it looks like my mom and I, as a duo, fit your pet peeve (sorry about that:embarrassed:). My mom likes 'Sheep may Safely Graze'. I'll look into the Biggs arrangements. Thanks for your suggestions.

I guess to narrow down the search (because I didn't narrow it down by genre) any piano/organ duets that you have had fun learning and/or playing for whatever reason (fun/interesting genre, partner, venue, piece, etc.).
