  • Gaston Bélier's* Toccata in D Minor

I have the score of Gaston Bélier's Toccata from International Music Score Library Project (IMSLP). I have provided the link if you would like to check it. In the last four measures the pedal has an octave leap D2 to D1 in the first measure, the next 2 measures have a leap from G2 to D1. However, all of the performances I have heard play D2 to D1 in those measures. Can someone please shed some light on this? I would appreciate it.

Unfortunately the link I entered is not the link to the score, even though the correct link appears when I try to edit it. I apologize. However, you can get the score from IMSLP for free if you want to check it.

Interesting! My copy, which I downloaded from IMSLP, has Ds. It looks as if Pierre Gouin (and what a lot of organ music he has edited for us!) has revised it. I presume the revision is correct and those two pedal notes should indeed be Gs. (My copy is copyright 2011 but the current one is 2012). You could email the editor and see what he says.

It's an attractive piece, if not great music - too many sequences - but when I've played it people have liked it.

Thank you for your response, Peterboroughdiabason.

Interestingly, I found one performance on YT (sorry, I do not remember who it was) who did something interesting. He played D1 each time in the pedal. However the last time he went to D1 for the second pedal note. I am not sure if he did this because the pedal board on the organ did not have the high D. However it made the final low D1 have more impact.

Nice piece. Thank you for introducing (some of) us to it!
