  • Buxtehude's Royal Fanfare

Are any of you familiar with the piece attributed to Buxtehude in the link below? It is called Royal Fanfare, although Buxtehude would have given it a different name. I did a search for it on IMSLP to no avail.

Doesn't sound like Buxtehude to me.

Or to me. I almost want to say it's English ... like Stanley or Blow but it doesn't really sound like them either.

Sounds like not very good improvising to me!

I believe it is an arrangement of the fanfare/sinfonia from Dietrich Buxtehude's cantata Ihr lieben Christen, freut euch nun BuxWV 51 : https://youtu.be/9A3p7O_v_2c

I noticed that there's an E. Power Biggs 1973 Columbia album Famous Organs of Holland and North Germany that includes it (don't have an audio link).

Egg on face! It's nothing like any Buxtehude organ music of course.

Mind you the piece is not helped by two wrong chords - in bars 7 & 8. The harmony is also weakened by the bass part being often in the wrong octave, with octave leaps ignored. The first half sounds fine.

Having maligned Buxtehude, I thought I'd record another version of this piece (from the score on IMSLP).

I'm not claiming any special qualities for this performance, except that my version sticks more closely to the score than the version in the original post. It could really do with a continuo organ as well as one playing the brass parts.

Thank you SchnarrHorn. I'll be looking for that anthology to try. The only problem is I only found a place to purchase it-in the UK!:-(

Where's that. Michael? I can only find it in Presto Classical over here, but it's currently out of stock. I could order it, but I'm not sure I want to spend too much money on it unless there are other pieces worth having in it. Do you play anything from it Schnarrhorn?

No, have not played anything out of it, although I'm going to give the fanfare a try. The music book is available at the link I posted - sheetmusicplus.com. At least it says it's in stock. Shipping in the USA. Not clear where you both are located and where you want to ship from.

Nice job, Peterboroughdiapas. That would make a great piece for a gospel procession on a feast day.

Indeed, I had thought of it for Pentecost - if the churches are allowed to open by then here in the UK.

Totally off topic, but in an "organic" way - did anyone look at the source of the original musical sample? The Kingdom of Boomeria seems to have been quite the place, complete with a large tracker pipe organ! Sadly, Atlas Obscura (a wonderful site to kill many hours of your time) indicates that the Kingdom is now permanently closed.

Since I've put my version of the Buxtehude on computer, here it is if anyone's interested.
