  • Gaël Liardon

In another thread, [Frescobaldi arrangement of "We Shall Overcome"] I noted the similarity of Frescobaldi's "Bergamasca" to "We Shall Overcome." I posted a video of a performance to the Frescobaldi piece so others could listen for themselves. I had heard it on Pipedreams and was really struck by the similarity.

Leisesturm added a post of a performance of Gaël Liardon's variations on "We Shall Overcome." To spare you looking it up, here it is:

This is a great example of someone taking a recent melody and giving treating it in an earlier style. I was unfamiliar with Liardon, but discovered that he composed a fair bit for organ and much of it is available free on IMSLP [link below]. This is a treasure trove of wonderful material. Enjoy.

Gaël Liardon was a Swiss classical keyboard player, composer and academic. Born in Lausanne, he studied harpsichord, organ and continuo playing with Pierre-Alain Clerc and Jovanka Marville, piano with Freddy Balta, and improvisation with Rudolf Lutz. Sadly he died at the young age of 46.
