  • Help identifying composition!

    Hi everyone!

I've recently come across a composition I believe to be by Max Reger, but am having trouble finding it anywhere. If anyone can help, here is a link to a recording:

    Thanks!

Doesn't sound like any Reger I played before or know well. Sorry that I can't help. (But then again, I only play Reger occasionally).
Do you have the sheet music without information on the composer, or what do you mean by "coming across" the composition?
And welcome to the forum :-)

      Yes, Welcome!

I agree with andijah - that's not Reger - though I'm curious to know why you think it might be.

It sounds more French or English, and more recent than Reger.

Can you provide any more information - who recorded it or where it was recorded? Do you know if it's an improvisation or a written-out composition?

This sounds like an improvisation rather than someone playing a composition. The theme is very short and it sounds like gebrauchsmusik. It might serve a useful purpose in a service, but it would not be a piece I would want to learn. Can you tell us how and where you found it?

I hope others agree it good to continue asking music to be identified in this thread instead of starting a new one each time. I have a few I want identified. They could be by Pachelbel or someone else, and they may not necessarily be intended for the organ even though they sound natural on it.

I would it helpful if people could say more about where they found the music or when and where it was recorded.

Your wav71 is BWV 556, the "little" prelude in F.

The wav48 sounds like any typical "trumpet tune", slightly familiar, but I have no idea what it could be.

Thanks, I originally thought Buxtehude, but it wasn't quite his style. I don't know why I dismissed Bach as a potential, but figured maybe it was Pachelbel.

wav48 is "All' Offertorio" by Zipoli. It's a pretty typical Italian display piece over a pedal drone - held for40 bars!

As for the remaining 2, they're so short and of such little interest I can't think why you'd want to identify them. Where did you get them? Is that all you have?

Many thanks, I never would have guessed it. I just figured it was somewhat French or something. I don't have much of the others beyond what I uploaded. To keep the files small I just selected what I thought was the most memorable part. I thought they were catchy tunes, I like the intro/repeated theme of wav64, but the rest of it isn't all that great. Wav70 has little more to it in that composition, mainly it is that short tune that repeats at different volumes. It's a pleasant tune to hear every once in a while, but can get old fast. Maybe it is some sort of a variation on a theme.

Seems I was miles away with my trumpet tune assocation. Will have to talk to my brain. :embarrassed:

I think it could have been lots of things! However it seemed both 17th century Italian and familiar and I'm pretty sure it was on an LP of E Power Biggs playing on Italian organs. I've long since thrown that out, though, so I can't check. I found the piece in an anthology.
