• Suggestions for concert finisher

    Hello all,

I'll be doing a recital next year (this is a pretty rare event in my life!) and I'm mulling over potential pieces to learn. It'll be on a 2-manual neo-Baroque instrument, but pretty much everything you can imagine has been attempted on this beast. In any case, I'm looking for suggestions for a piece to close the concert, maybe on the more modern end of the spectrum, loud and flashy of course, but not outrageously difficult, and preferably not total fluff either. The audiences at these recitals are generally very well-versed, and lollipops are not required.

As a gauge of standard, I play many of the standard-issue French Toccatas, but I find the Duruflé Toccata (for example) beyond my abilities at this time.

Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

    Si

I would personally love to hear the Toccata by Franz Schmidt.

But it is devilishly difficult - that's probably why nobody plays it.

Do you play any Vierne? The Final from his Fifth Symphony is quite nice, and would make an intresting alternative to the morecommonly-played pieces.

I have lots of ideas, but alas I'm far from my library and it is not easy for me to confirm titles (I'm not on a'normal' computer).

I mightsuggest more titles later. [:)]

Thank you gentlemen, all suggestions taken on board. I'll probably play a big Bach work somewhere in the centre of the programme, and actually the Passacaglia is one possibility I have already considered. Other considerations are the G minor Fantasia and Fugue or, if I want something lighter at that point, maybe the G major P&F.

Also in the programme will probably be some Lubeck (E major maybe), some Mendelssohn (haven't decided yet, maybe E minor Fugue), possibly some Schumann, and I might play that Derek Bourgeois Serenade. This is all very up in the air at the moment, but that's the kind of programme I'm considering.

The Mulet would probably be a good choice, although maybe a little lollipop-esque for the audience. I also feel that I should maybe play something a little more "modern", although that may change.

I've played bits and bobs of Vierne, SB, but the only relatively large-scale piece I've learned is the Finale of the First. I really want to learn more of this music, so a flashy Vierne might be a really good choice, although I definitely couldn't play anything that required CC-esque sonorities at this gig. We're more in strident mixture territory here...

Thank you all, keep 'em coming!

Why not some Kagel? Not difficult, rather short pieces in "Rrrrrr". As it is a baroque organ why not some lesser know baroque. The fuga by Reincken perhaps or some Bruhns. If you like more romantic, then Lefébure-Wély has a lot that can serve as a funny closure. Or Rinck.

Oh, how about 'Transports de joie' by Messiaen? Or, 'Dieu parmi nous'?

If you really wantamodernsounding piecethere are a number of Messiaen pieces that come to mind - they can soundjust asfine in a mixture-dominated tutti.

Don't know Kagel at all, I must look him up. To be honest, I'd probably prefer to move a bit away from Baroque by that point. You can have too much of a good thing (although I know you disagree, Havoc!)

Transports de Joie is certainly an option. That said, I took it out recently with a view to working it up again and it was like starting from scratch. I find it a really difficult piece to keep in my fingers -- there are bits of it now that I can't believe I could EVER play!!

How about "Final" from Alfred Fedak's Lyric Suite? (The recording I've linked to is played by the artist, although I've reduced it to Low-Fi quality to hopefully not violate any Copyright rules; the High-Fi version sounds much better.)

The Toccata by Marcel Lanquetuit is a great crowd pleaser.

                            Sounds dangerous!![:D]

I'm not so much looking for "challenge" as I'm looking for "crowd-pleasing yet musically satisfying piece that sounds really difficult but is actually quite straightforward to play".

                            Am I asking too much...?

That said, where would one find either of said pieces? (I have yet to look at the links posted in your sig, so this question might be reduntant in a matter of moments!)

good, that's the right attitude to approach a concert with.

if said links are where thy pieces are to be found, said linksshouldthy who seeks them, follow. That being said they're nightmarish to play. but any serious and determined musician aught to be able to handle them (though there aren't many of those).

bach's toccata and fugue in in d minor and widor's toccata are bothvery straightforeward in structure and style, but sound difficult if played at speed and faster.
