  • Elusive Pieces

I'm sure many of us have spent years searching for scores which have become out of print, or just simply difficult to get your hands on.

Some pieces, such as the Langlais Fete are now back in print and readily available, but there are some which are difficult to find.

One such work I've had trouble finding is the Garth Edmundson Vom Himmel Hoch. I've searched high and low, but couldn't find it in any shop or internet site. I'd heard it was published by H.W.Gray in a previous series, but is now out of print. So I shall continue hunting!

Others I've had no luck with include: Batalla de Sexto Tono (Jiminez), Sweet Sixteenths (Albright - no matter who I order it from, I always get a reply telling me it's out of print!), 5 Dances (Gardner), Toccata (Driffill), Prelude Andante et Toccata (Fleury - same case as the Albright), Will O The Wisp (Nevin), Toccata (Schmidt - that fiendish one in C major).

Any help locating any of these would be much appreciated. A hunt around Foyles and Chappells when I'm in London next may uncover a few.

What about the rest of you guys? What are your elusive pieces?

I'm playing a Toccata in E minor by Heinrich Reimann at a recital this summer. The only snag is that I don't have the music, and I'm really struggling to put my hands on it. I have a photocopy that's missing a few pages (including the last page), but my compositional skills aren't up to filling in the blanks. I spoke to Chimes music and they're trying to get it for me, but the publisher was able to tell them that it's never been in stock in the UK, ever!</p>

So, if anyone has it, please let me know!

I'm certain that I have tons of music by Garth Edmundson, but I'm not certain what the titles are.

These are some of the pieces that I've wanted to have (I have not looked for all of them):</P>
      <UL>
<LI>Walter Piston - Prelude and Allegro for Organ and String Orchestra</LI>
      <LI>W.T. Best - The English National Anthem</LI>
      <LI><SPAN class=piecedata><FONT class=piecename>Achille Philip - Lied; also the Toccata and Fugue in A minor</FONT></SPAN></LI>
      <LI><SPAN class=piecedata>Henri Dallier - 5 Invocations</SPAN></LI>
      <LI><SPAN class=piecedata>Edouard Commette - 6 Pièces</SPAN></LI>[/list]

      <SPAN class=piecedata>There are others... but that's a start.</SPAN></P>

In the interests of closure I feel I should share the news that the Reimann piece arrived yesterday.

Kensington Music Shop (aka Chimes) sourced it for me. They're pretty good at that kind of thing!

I own a copy of the Dallier - I bought brand new a few years ago and it was very expensive! I found though that I couldn't really play any of it, and I still can't![:@] What a waste...</P>

As for the Commette, I was desparate to buy that as well. I managed to find a copy on the internet - I think it was musicroom.com, ordered it but then it got cancelled because they didn't stock it anymore due to the fact that nobody was buying them!</P>

Another piece I want to find is the Toccata by someone called Hammond. I heard this in a competition I played in and found it very jazzy.</P>

Great to know the Berveiller is finally in print! I have a photocopy of the original manuscript, which is a bit difficult to read. I'd be very interested in getting a typeset version. [:)]
