• Toccata Figuration Question

After years of playing the organ, I am almost embarassed to ask this question. There should be a book "Toccatas for Dummies" that would be of great use.

Anyway, I don't play a lot of toccatas and the ones I usually play the right hand figurations are all written out for example like the Boellman "Suite Gothique"

Well I now want to move another step and start looking at other toccatas but the figuration on the page has me puzzled. What I am hearing is not how it is written. Is there some secret 'holy grail' mystique of how to read this?

    For example: Vierne #1 Finale

The opening bar the chords are in appearance

(RH) AD, F#A, (LH)F#A, AD etc repeating.

I am pretty sure these chords are not placed as chords but broken into some kind of arpreggio. But what is the order? I can take some guesses but I am sure someone might be able to lead me by the hand through this vale of notes.

Please be gentle with me and thanks in advance for your assistance.

You don't do anything, just play it exactly as written.[Y] What are you hearing that's different?

ETA: What I mean by "exactly as written" is that you play

    1. AD in right hand,

    2. release and play F#A in right hand,

    3. release and play F#A in left hand,

    4. then release and play AD in left hand, etc.
I use the fingering 52, 31 (or 41), 25, 13 for these four steps.

No they aren't broken into arpeggios. They are eighth notes inchords of two notes each and the two chords in each hand are slurred. It's in cut time so the effect is 1&&& 2&&& for the first bar and each of those 8 symbols consists of a 2 note chord slurred in pairs of 2.

      Hope that makes sense.

SimonS has indicated the fingering you'd want to use.
