Guess who is celebrating the big 200 today?

    Happy Birthday Mendelssohn! [<:o)][^]

I suggest you all play or listen to some Mendelssohn today. It is good for the soul. [:)]

It is hard for me to pickfrom so manyfavorites, but I'm very fond of these:

    Midsummer Night's Dream: Notturno

Psalm 42: Like as the Hart

YouTube is being quite slow today, so here is another option (a little recording by yours truly) [:)]

War March of the Priests, from Athalie

The Notturno actually works beautifully on the organ. I've played it many times.

    Some of my favourite Mendelssohn:

    I waited for the Lord

Scherzo a capriccio in F# minor

Prelude & Fugue in E minor (piano)

The 'Scottish' Symphony and 'Fingal's Cave'. (If you've been to Scotland, particularly the Hebrides, this music makes a lot more sense.)

And how could one not be moved by the Lutheran torrents of 'St Paul'?

I am off to practice three wonderful pieces from his Berlin-Krakow Manuscripts, numbers III, XIII, and XIII. Does anyone know if the Novello edition has been reprinted? Right now I am working off photocopies from my teacher (somehow, I don't think he would be angry [:)])

Sorry Philip, I don't know if that has been reprinted. [*-)]

What, are there only three Mendelssohn fans on this entire Forum? [:S]

Hard to believe, in fact I don't. Face it, he's not very fashionable... sort of helplessly retro, bollocks to that.

I still vividly recall a slam-dunk performance of St. Paul at the Three Choirs Festival some years back. (Whew, those tickets were expensive.) But that glorious oratorio almost floored me as much as my first encounter with Gerontius. I've never been as patient with Elijah since.

I've done St. Paul once and Elijah twice - they are both wonderful. I'm doing Psalm 42 now and am quite fond of Die Erste Walpurgisnacht.

I just finished reading a ton of email, where I found an invitation to perform Elijah in a few weeks. Don't know if I should, as it is a morning rehearsal/evening performance and I have another performance the same afternoon (a different group, entirely different program).

I'm glad to be working. [:)]

I am a Mendelssohn fan. I am fond of all of his organ works and also his Second Symphony #2 (Song of Praise) and of course, Elijah.

                      Aloha Maestro SB32,

Yes, I like Mendelssohn's music quite a bit - Thank you for acknowledging Alain's birthday. Everytime I play or hear his oeuvre, the phrase *Phantasmagorical* comes to mind. Somewhat recently a widow asked me to play *Deuils* at her husbands funeral since he loved Alain's organ music very much - He perished while serving our Country. It was very moving to see members of his unit in Dress Uniform carry the coffin with the flag draped over it. As a former military man myself I strained to hold back the tears whilst playing the piece - powerful music for a Hero's repose.

Deuils played at a serviceman's funeral - I'm stirred to the very core at the thought of it.

I performed Luttes this past weekend (as well as the Mendelssohn March).I did a war/peace theme for my concert, and the Alain was quite apropos.

Yet another fan here of both Mendelssohn and Alain. Of the former, the C minor Prelude and Fugue is my favourite.

Those Trois Danses are tricky works, as is much ofAlain's organ music. I think the Intermezzo must be the most difficult, however.

No, it wasn't a 'real' organ piece, but the tune is nice enough.
