Mother's Day has caught me by surprise this year - any suggestions on suitable prelude and postlude material? My church still has not added wording "Faith of Our Mothers" to the familiar parternalistic hymn, so that one doesnt fit.

I too can't think of anything that is specific for Mothers. But any piece that pays homage to Mary (in that she was the Mother of Jesus) would have a similar intention.

Actually, last Sunday our 11am mass was intertwined with the baptism service of two children. As a prelude I played the Andante Cantabile from Widor's Symphony No.4. This is quite a sentimental piece which would perhaps fit well too.
Thanks for your suggestions - the Priere a Notre Dame might be just the thing and I did practice it up just a few weeks ago. I'm not hip enough to know the Abba reference.
Oh Jason, I am sorry for desecrating the Widor work slightly! I'm really rather fond of it though.
In the end, mine got Prierea Notre Dame before the service, and Widor's Toccata to finish - I didn't have much time to prepare something different, unfortunately.
Thanks again guys for the suggestions - I used Boellman's (sp?) Priere a Notre Dame for prelude and Gordon Young's Chaconne (after Couperin) as postlude.
I forgot to mention that I have an exquisite setting of Salve sancta parens by Henri Nibelle - it would probably fit the bill.
[/quote]
Wow, Nibelle - a very out-of-the-ordinary composer. His two bigger works for organ are great, but I also have some smaller quieter works by him which are great service material.
If you have Nibelle's 'smaller quieter works' you may very well have the collection that contains the Salve sancta parens - it is my favorite in the entire collection.
