  • Sad news but great opportunity.

So, I just received news that my church won't be meeting for a while due to COVID-19 cases rising in Idaho. I am sad.

HOWEVER, this gives me the opportunity to practice and learn my churches hymns for organ!

Kind of a bitter sweet thing.

I have a Hammond Regent that I repaired and I plan on practicing hymns on it. I don't want to miss the opportunity for more time to learn hymns.

Thus begins my learning of church hymns.

A good opportunity should not go to waste. My church (Richardson, Texas) has only recently began having a congregation in the space after months of on-line worship only. They are limiting to 250 souls in a Sanctuary that seats 1300. I continue to worship via Internet.

A great way to use the isolation time. Same here. I've found myself practicing more and sharpening my skills quite a bit these past few months. Keep up the good work!

Thank you both for your kind comments. I will be practicing a lot more often now. If I sharpen my skills enough, I may actually be able to play organ in church once everything fully reopens.

that's actually a dream of mine.

These "down days" are a great time for sharpening our skills. There is time to explore some online resources, such as the fine organ instructional materials from the Mormons and other groups, and to enjoy the superb playing of the great organists who post on You Tube and other sites. I'm following several organists on You Tube who are teaching me a LOT about technique and registration just by their examples.

But the best way to spend my time is putting on headphones and simply playing through the hymnals I have.

The Mormons have organ instructional materials? Wow, that works out just fine because I'm Mormon myself!

Ill have to look into that now!

Yes, very sad news. I had just got congregational singing back at my parish and we had been belting out hymns for 3 weeks until..... *cue Toccata in D minor*.... lockdown. Now we are back to a single cantor who will chant the propers with organ accompaniment. The recessional hymn is replaced by an organ postlude (which I can't honestly complain about).
Just like when the whole Covid thing started another great time for extra practice, so good luck, Jared (and everybody else)!!!

My church is blest with two fine organists. And now we are on line completely. When in person, the postlude is often blurred by the persons greeting others and leaving (which is fine). I no longer have that distraction problem. But the trade off is lower quality audio. But the main thing (improvement) is there are no time constraints as to how long a piece you might want to perform. Something seven or eight minutes won't cause any scheduling problems. Those of us who appreciate it can sit back and enjoy it. It seems this forum is largely optimists, trying to find a bright spot.

Thats exactly what happened here. We were going back to church, then, like you said, "Cue Toccata in D minor," we are going virtual due to Covid19 cases rising in Idaho.
