Faire is the Heaven - W.H. Harris It has some beautiful passages and a wonderful ending

Hear my Prayer, O Lord - Purcell I love the daring dissonant harmonies

And I Saw a New Heaven - E. Bainton If I was a religious person, I would find this piece very spiritually comforting.

Greater Love - John Ireland An anthem with passion and subtleness at the same time

I'm quite fond ofthese anthems (in no specific order):

I Sat Down Under His Shadow (Bairstow) audio clip is #5 in the list

Like As the Hart (Howells)

My Lovely One (Finzi)
[/list]

That is just scratching the surface! I have some favorite renaissance works as well.

This might fall outside the scope of an anthem, but this is the one choral work that completely overwhelms me - this movement in particular: Howells - Requiem Aeternam

Theastonishing polychords appear at the text: et lux perpetua luceat eis(let perpetual light shine upon them) then the music rises to a light-filled climax, as if the heavens have opened- otherworldly indeed.

It has more impact if you know the story behind its composition.

Wow. Your list looks like it could have come from a dear friend of mine who died in 1996. During his illness, the choir he led surprised him with a visit at the hospital and we sang the Biebl and Stanford pieces you mentioned. It was one of the most moving experiences I've ever had.

I'm with you on that one for sure. One of my favorites is "Springs in the Desert" by Jennings(?) I think. I have to double check my score [not here] to be sure.
