• Taizé service and music

One of the Protestant churches for whom I work is considering the addition of a Taizé service. I am unfamiliar with Taizé. Can someone suggest sources of literature and music.

In the USA, all Tazie music is published by GIA. You can order from them or your favorite local provider. I can give you lots of info and help if you're interested. Just PM me! Best wishes. I like this style of worship, and hope to visit their community some day.

        Hi Larry,

You should visit the Taizé community's website, <taize.fr>. It tells a lot about the community, the style of worship, how to do the service and music, and has sound files of the songs well performed, as well as files for learning each voice part individually.

I have had a bit of experience the Taizé worship in the past, and recently we had a very fine and beautiful service at my church. The whole experience is wonderful if well done. Some people have the mistaken idea that Taizé songs "are just repeated ad infinitum" (and that's all that some do). The whole service, incorporating readings, silence, and candlelight, as well as the music done with instrumental descants or cantor parts, is quite wonderful, and refreshingly different from typical Sunday morning services (which of course I also love dearly).

Also, be sure to get a book that has the accompaniments and instrumental parts in addition to the congregational sung parts.

Good luck with it! I would be glad to talk more about it if you want.

          Tim and Thom,

Thank you for the information. The pastor is very interested in Taizé worship. It will be awhile before the pastor has a chance to develop a service. She is thinking about having the service every 6 weeks on a weekday evening. The church is in a college town, so she hopes to involve students in the performance of the instrumental and vocal parts.
