  • Jazz & Blues: Jimmy Smith - The Sermon Sound - Bar 6?

    Hi,

I've always loved this classic tune; "The Sermon" by Jimmy Smith. One thing I've never been able to figure out is there's a unique sound in bar six. It's almost like a growl. Does anyone know what that sound is? Is it Jimmy breathing, growling, does he make that sound with the organ, and if so how does he do it?

    Thanks,

    Johnny B.

So, I don't feed too bad. 49 of you looked at my post and it seems like no one knows! Here's a link to the version I'm referring to on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3X5J_wGHrw

    Thanks

Now over 500 views! Does anybody know what those sounds are on "The Sermon", or am I the only one who cares? Thanks, Johnny B.

It could be a creaky bench but I've checked other video recordings (although different speeds) and not that much body roll at those places, unless he was intoxicated which would explain the tempo :-)What ever it is one thing is for sure - it's a strange recording!

Thanks for responding! I was beginning to think I was crazy, and I was the only one who heard it! Yeah, maybe's he's grunting, loaded, or rocking the bench. Guess we'll never know for sure!

Jimmy would grunt when he played. Playing bass when soloing.

Think, there is a lot going on at all extremities.

At the speed of sound all that going on...:-/
