Don't take this too seriously please. It's supposed to be light-hearted!

Add your stories and anecdotes about this delightful if eccentric group of people.

LOL Hopefully, no one organist has those faults in totality, or they'd be unemployed. Smelly feet probably shouldn't be an issue - trained organists normally wear organist shoes.

A church organist annoys the organ tuner too. Here's a short list.....

      1. Wearing shoes with black rubber heels and soles. These leave unsightly black scuff marks all over the pedals and are very, very difficult to remove!

      2. Dropping jewelry into the pedal board....then putting one's hands down inside the pedals, trying to retrieve the piece of jewelry. This results in bent contacts (causing dead notes or ciphers). Occasionally, the technician has the inner personal great laugh (not obvious to the organist), when the organist shows off a bandaged hand or wrist, where the pedal contacts scratched the organist back when they reached in for the piece of jewelry.

      3. Leaving old soiled Kleenex tissues wadded up in a pile on the key cheeks. What sort of virus resides in these old tissues when the technician has to pick them up in order to service the insides of the console?

      4. Paper clips made of Metal![:'(] These fall between the keys, jamming a note, or through the keys into the key contacts, causing a cipher.

Amen, Jay! Whither stewardship? Before anyone gets near the organ at our church, I make sure they get a dose of my obviously obsessively proprietary personality - in addition to being interviewed regarding their competence and coached about the details. This process successfully eliminates the kind of vandalism that you encounter (thus far, anyway).

The issues that Jay to which Jay refers should be obvious to any organist. To add to this

          1. Do not use the pencil eraser where crumbs fall into the console action

          2. Do not eat or drink at the console.

Any responsible person should already be aware of all these issues - what organist is not?

he or she thinks that they own the organ and that they will own it until the day they die!

This type of organist NEVER lets another organist or organ student practice on the instrument, nor do they let any other organist play the organ in public for any occasion. What about pre-prelude music, when the organist is rehearsing the choir before the service? Oh that would be uncalled for, to have anyone else play the organ on Sunday. What about extra services as in Lent? Oh, it would be terrible if someone else played the organ for a mid-week service as well. This person is nothing but an organ hog!

This type of organist also is never sick and never takes off a Sunday. If by some miracle they do take off a Sunday, they have someone lined up already to substitue for them and that person plays the organ very badly. That way the regular organist looks real good and feels no threat. Would it be such a crime if someone who could really play the organ be the substitute organist?

We have been blessed a new RCCO organist in our community, whoattributes his success today, to a unique and rare kind of priest who figured that people, and especially children, were more important than church property. Duh!Heremembers way back asten-year-old, how many hours, with the priest's blessing, he spent"playing" with the church organ.

Ifyour church organ is too precious for children to play with;perhaps anobnoxious and insignificant part of the congregation where you come from; then you are definitelyengaged in the wrong business!!

May your ever so wonderful church organ live forever! [^o)]

It can be overdone, though--like when I'm practicing and a dozen 5-12-year-olds gather around and start pushing pistons, pulling stops, and hitting the cancel. [:@] It doesn't help that my church's console has lighted drawknobs and they have contests with me to see if they can turn off all the stops--I hit the tutti button every few seconds so I can continue practicing.[6] They don't listen to me when I tell them to stop because I'm not much older than them.[:^)] It doesn't happen often, but... [8o|]

                LOL

Well...to get back closer to the topic of this thread..."A church organist annoys you the most when....."

Most of the church organists I know today are encouraging youngsters to get acquainted with their church organ. That's good, and nothing about that is bad. We need all the youth we can get for the instrument today. In the particular places I know of, where this type of activity goes on, the organist encourages the child to bring a piece of music they are working on in piano lessons, and the organist registers a proper stop set-up, and shows the child how to play the piece on the organ. The child gets to play the organ with enthusiastic supervision, and knowledgeable encouragement.

At times when the organ is unattended, the console is locked up...so the instrument won't be subjected to unintentional abuse. Unintentional abuse could be no more than leaving the blower running all week, or as much as breaking a stop knob off. But the instrument must be protected from the unfamiliar, and unsupervised, curiosity seekers. So there is a balance here....protecting the instrument, but also encouraging it's use.

Any organist who doesn't take time to do that much for the next generation, is an organist who would annoy me.

They obviously have the church confused with Chuckie Cheese and think the organ is the game where you hit the frogs.

I would tell their parents what the children are doing and that they could break the organ. Then tell the parents how much a new organ would cost.

That should put an end to all of it!

That's sad. My church is not like that at all; if they were, they wouldn't even let me touch the organ. I have nothing against letting children play the organ, but I don't appreciate being "helped"[:^)] while I play.

lol if i were you I would put everything on and up and mean and scare them away xD When I'm practicing at the church (which the organ is not that big or mean), kids get scared and run away even when I'm just playing Widor's toccata with only 2 stops on [^o)] (even 13 year olds! KIDS MY AGE.) When I normally play it with tutti on measure 59 [*-)] that must REALLY scare them away from the church PROPERTY. Oo
