It's almost soft porn. Would you be distracted if he played a recital in such attire?

I think I'd have to pluck out my eyes so I could focus on the music. The attire looks as distracting as something Diane Bish might wear. Not that it impacts the quality of the music ... but I can say I don't want to see another guy quite so "on display."

Of course that being said ... I don't think a performance has to be given in a tux either. Particularly if it's not in a church setting. But I think in this case it looks like the start of a Chippendale's show or something.

Nah, not even close. It's actually quite a very well done photograph, if one can make the leap beyond homophobia :-) Liberace was far more flamboyant in his day (relative to the custom of his times, of course).

He doesn't play in quite that attire in any case, although the athletic nature of parts of his performances certainly demand the relatively cool, lightweight, non-formal, short sleeve attire he typically does wear.

Nice abs. If my body looked half that good, I'd do the same thing. LOL

As for distraction - all you would see at a recital is his back - or, if the console was facing the audience, his head. Which is probably a good thing - can't have the audience drooling on the pew racks, don't ya know.

If Cameron is going to display his abs like that it should be enshrined in law that one of those big mirrors above the organ console is installed so people can view the organist should be made compulsory. [H]

On reflection, I don't think it would be a distraction if a performer were dressed like that. On the other hand, it would be a distraction if someone else was on stage similarly attired. I can give two perfect examples, both of which took place on the same stage.

Towards the end of the eighties, the Southern Ballet Theater in Orlando, presented a full scale production of Carmina Burana on stage in the Carr Auditorium. They did it twice - a few years apart - with orchestra, ballet, and the Bach Festival Chorus. During the 'Roasted Swan' sequence, two male dancers held a pair of long rods (representing the spit on which the swan was being roasted)between them. A third male dancer, wearing only a blond wig and gold tights did interesting, acrobatic things while hanging from the spits - representing the swan slowly roasting. It always brought down the house, and during the final curtain calls the 'swan' got a standing ovation. The scene worked very well.

Fast forward a few years to about 10 years ago. The Orlando Opera, who, at the time had an artistic director with strange ideas, put on a production of Carmina with just chorus and orchestra. During one or more of the choruses, the audience was treated to a pair of acrobats performing in large hoops suspendeda good ten or fifteen feet above the chorus a la cirque du soleil. They were a scantily clad woman and a nearly naked man. I have nothing against scantily clad women, and I love nearly naked men - especially whey they are lithe and muscular - but, it did not work.

In the former example, the swan's relative nudity was not a distraction - it was part of the performance, and it worked.

In the latter example, the acrobats and their nearnudity were a definite distraction - they were not an integral part of the performance, and it didn't work.

This guy isn't an organist, but he's got what it takes.

This you tube video from a Spoletto production of four years ago has been making the rounds:

              Distracting, yes or no?

I find it interesting that this photo would draw such comments in light of the fact that women have worn all manner of clothing to highlight their more feminine parts, with no complaints from the men. I'm not trying to be sexist, but there does need to a fair playing field. I remember attending a choral concert once, of mostly serious works, for which one of the female soloists wore a dress with a SEVERELY plunging neckline. I heard a few people comment on it.

If any performer's work approaches the level of pyrotechnics, with a demonstration of full command of technique, they should be allowed to dress accordingly.

A singer in one of my choirs once suggested that I dress more eccentrically. I replied that I preferred to have spell-binding technique and ability first, and then I would add the eccentricity. But then again,if I hadsuch ability, who would care what I wear?

Interesting you should mention that. The other night, just before bedtime, I was flipping channels and stumbled upon an interview with violinist Joshua Bell - don't know the name of the guy condcting the interview. Bell was wearing a shirt open at the collar and what appeared to be jeans. They had a discussion about performance attire and Bell said that he had abandoned the tux and tails more than a decade ago for just a black shirt which gives him much more freedom of movement.

I had to look up his age - hard to believe he will be 42 in December. When I first saw him on stage he was in his mid to late twenties.

A year or two ago I saw someone on YouTube playing a Bach Chorale on his Hauptwerk set-up...nude. No 4" Principal, only his derriere. I wonder who he was? Soubasse perhaps?...One can only dream....[H]
