  • Wikipedia entry for "Pipe Organ" needs help.

I had a glance at the wikipedia entry for "pipe organ" yesterday and it contains mistakes or unintentionally misleading information.

I'll start with one found in the opening paragraph: It describes an organ as being supplied with "compressed air". That's wrong and it'd be as incorrect as stating that humans use carbon dioxide instead of oxygen for respiration. It's a bad start to an article that's acquires more credibility each day it remains uncorrected.

Can anyone find other mistakes or misleading information? I did. Otherwise, it's not bad. The comments section suggests that everyone is satisfied the article is correct.

I'd agree that Winkipedia (spelling intended) leaves something to be desired. However, the nature of a Wiki is that if you find incorrect or unintentionally misleading information, change it. Anyone who is registered with them can change it.
Way too many organs to list, but I do have 5 Allens:
    • MOS-2 Model 505-B / ADC-4300-DK / ADC-5400 / ADC-6000 (Symphony) / ADC-8000DKC
    • Lowrey Heritage (DSO-1)
    • 11 Pump Organs, 1 Pipe Organ & 7 Pianos

      "Winkipedia" LOL! [;)]

I agree that there is much that could be done with the "Pipe Organ" article. As time has permitted, I have done some revision of the "Action" section of the article. I enlarged the section to include tubular-pneumatic and direct electric actions. There is also work to be done on other organ related articles.

I wrote a new article "Tubular-pneumatic action", and greatly revised the "operation" section of the "Electro-pneumatic action" article. I also started the article "Direct electric action" which needs expansion. I tried to keep everything simple, while representative of the various forms of each type of action.

I have just changed "compressed air" to "a flow of air". in the "pipe organ" article, Technically, I
believe that an organ's wind actually is compressed air, but the term
is usually associated with a much higher pressure. My knowledge is mainly of organ mechanisms. If anyone sees improvements that could be made, but do not wish to make them yourself, let me know. If able, I could make such changes.

My Wikipedia user name is "Branchporter", but anybody can edit an article, whether or not they are registered. Changes by non registered or non trusted users are quickly reviewed, but mainly for vandalism. Checks for grammatical errors, lack of citations and accuracy take longer.

As part of this article, at one time, I thought there was a link to a clip of the 64 foot stop that's on the organ in Sidney Australia. I can't seem to find this now, could it have been taken down?

festivaltrumpet8 - Yes, the link could have been taken down.

The "Pipe Organ" article has gone through many revisions. There have been over 30 changes since this thread was started on June 8th! Some revisions have been substantial, while others are minor corrections of punctuation, etc. Every revision and all previous forms of the article can be accessed by clicking "History" at the top of the article. To find the missing link could be a daunting task, unless you know approximately when you saw it!

For those interested - there is a discussion page about what needs to be or has been done concerning the pipe organ article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Pipe_organ

In general, the article is improving. My revisions have not been changed!

Thanks psrick for that link to the Sydney Town Hall organ -- I greatly enjoyed hearing it played in the high quality recordings and the video of the town hall organist demonstrating was enjoyable as well. The 64' is quite a novelty!
