  • Old Pabst Mansion Aeolian Organ - Oconomawoc, Wisconsin

Quite a number of years ago, there was an ad in "The Diapason" for the Aeolian organ at the old Gustav Pabst estate outside of Oconomawoc (sp?) Wisconsin. I went up there and viewed the organ and even took a few pictures. Was in very fine original condition but needed work - releathering?, etc. and was disconnected to I couldn't play it. Was a 2 manual, maybe 27 ranks and had an additional separate roll player in cabinet. Does anyone know if this was ever purchased and moved to another location or still may be there and hopefully restored? I believe the estate was left to some branch of the catholic church who no longer wanted the organ or needed to sell it for $$$ to keep the furnace running. The organ is listed in Rollin Smith's book as opus #1660, ca. 1927/8

    Thanks

That would be the Pabst estate known as Pabst Farms, not to be confused with the Pabst Mansion, which is in downtown Milwaukee.. The estate is being developed but I have never heard anything about any organ belonging to the Pabst family. Sorry I can't be of any more help. Eventhough the organ wasn't located at the Pabst Mansion, I would contact them for any information about the Pabst family.

Thanks for the correction on "mansion" versus "estate" or farms. Hopefully, the organ is still there and has been restored and not scrapped. It was in remarkable original condition when I saw it. The book says Colonel Gustav Pabst. I suppose, somehow related to the brewery family. Too bad so many of these things get pulled from their original home and disbursed. There aren't too many of them around anymore in their original homes.

Your post is quite old but I just stumbled upon it. The Pabst estate that you are talking about is not Pabst Farm or the Pabst Mansion. It is the summer home of Gustav and Hilda Pabst which is south of I94 off of Hwy 67 in Oconomowoc (actually the Town of Summit). The Oconomowoc Developmental Training Center now occupies that property. You are correct, it was occupied by an order of the Catholic church before the training center took over. There is a Redemptorist retreat house located nearby, which is still in operation and was once the home of a Pabst relative. Perhaps someone there would know what happened to the organ. Otherwise, I would contact the Milwaukee Archdiocese office. They may have some idea of where it went. I think some things from that home are also in the basement of the main building at Pabst Farms. Good luck and let me know if you find it.

The Catholic Church did receive many of the Pabst properties. The Pabst Mansion, in downtown Milwaukee, became the residence of the Catholic bishop. It is now a museum. I wouldn't be surprised if the organ you talk about ended up in a local Catholic church.
