  • St. John the Divine (live recording)

I had the good fortune to be in the church Sunday for the annual Blessing of the Animals celebration. I was sitting towards the rear of the crossing close to the center aisle... pretty much the sweet point.

I recorded the organ during the presentation and cleansing of the altar (about 8 minutes). This is a stereo MP3 recorded with no limiting using an excellent hand size stereo digital recorder. There is no overload or gain riding.

Now the good and the bad.

1: This recording captures as no other (that I have heard) the unique tonality of the instrument. You have read of it… now hear it!

    2. The church was full of people (and dogs) about 5,000 souls which reduces the very blurring acoustic.

    3. The balance between organ and choir (in this case several hundred) is as heard. That means the voices are swamped!

    The downside...

1: You need a full range music system for proper frequency balance. The pedal is there but you need a subwoofer to feel it

    2. There is a lot of audience noise (including dog barking) in the quiet passages.

    3. Because of the animals the State Trumpet does not sound. However other trumpet voices are deployed and clearly audible

Indeed they are (in the quiet passages). The canine endeavors were for naught against the massive output in the louder sections.

I presume you got permission from the organist.
