  • Salisbury Cathedral - temp use of samples of its own organ

While Salisbury Cathedral's organ is temporarily out of use, they're using sampled organs (in "Hauptwerk"). One of the sample-sets is of the Cathedral's own Willis organ. [H]

    Che,

The Cathedral authorities actually asked Bret Milan to record their Willis organ. Which of course Bret couldn't refuse. The Cathedral wanted a historical document of their organ. I believe there may also be an arrangement where the Cathedral benefits from having this sample set released commercially. The organist also wanted a sample set of this organ for his own practice instrument.

And how is it. Right out of the box, it is one of the most stunning sample sets I have yet had a chance to try out. It is far from finished, but what is there is a very good example of what an outstanding example English organ sounds like.

My guess is that this sample set will be a favourite among the Hauptwerk fraternity.

I first came across Hauptwerk maybe 7 or 8 years ago. It was very hit and miss then, and the free sample set was St. Anne's Mosely. It didn't sound all that good. Now that Hauptwerk has hit it's stride, and sample sets are better recorded and processed, it is just amazing how good the setup can be.

I think manufacturers or digital organs are going to have serious trouble matching or surpassing what can be done through Hauptwerk. And lots of folks are cobbling together their own systems and getting good results.

My how things have changed in the last 10 years.

Here's a news video of Daniel Cook, Salisbury Cathedral organist, discussing and briefly demonstrating the use of the sampled organs, including the samples of the Cathedral's own Father Willis:
