Might as well inaugurate the forum migration with some controversy. Does anyone know anything about the FORMER pipe organ at Middle Collegiate Church in NYC? This was the instrument that started life as a 1931 Odell, Gallery division added by Odell in 1950, rebuilt and added to by Odell in 1960, and then rebuilt and added to again by Austin in 1988 to be the final III/47 instrument that lasted until 2008 when it was replaced by a Marshall & Ogletree electronic. The Austin spec looks honestly pretty average with some holes in it.
This is the church Cameron Carpenter was artist in residence at. I'm wondering: was the pipe organ that unremarkable? Was the action failing again and in need of a rebuild? Or was this simply another casualty of the Cameron/M&O pipe organ replacement agenda?
Has anyone here ever heard or played or worked on the former pipe organ?
