  • Girard College

I have heard quite a few organs, in person and on c.d. One of the best sounding instruments I have ever heard (Europe and USA), is the Skinner organ at Girard college. The foundations, orchestral reeds and strings are awesome. The tonal finishing of the organ was the work of a master. I have never, however, heard it in person. Have any of you heard the instrument? What to you think?

    All the best----

      Re: Girard College

Girard College is a boarding school, formerly boys only, now mixed, in Philadelphia. The beatiful Chapel has a wonderful Skinner organ from the very early G Donald Harrison years. It is installed up in the ceiling for an interesting effect, although it isn't the best sounding Skinner still around.

that skinner is ONE of the very best

it was sold and designed NOT by gdh but by ems

he was going deaf and wanted the erzahlers on the enc great to be louder

when he would leave the then organist would have them made softer by the tonal finisher still there

poor ems couldnt tell next visit that they had been softened and gloated at how nice they sounded HIS way-haha

the 3 great diapasons are his doing

they r scaled and designed according to his narrow high mouths and played all 3 at once they are marvellous

ive heard this organ numerous times at informal organ sessions for the virgil fox socoety

fox thought hoghly of this organ

the swell reeds sound to me more along willis lines than typical skinner

        they are fiery and bright

the tubas in the solo were revoiced under carlo curley but later restored

when i heard them they sounded too brite

the old wood 32 bombarde and 32 fagotto are thrilling foundations for the pedal and entire organ

solo gambas are emotional and flute celeste melts

erzahler celestes in the great are a rare combo but very beautiful

stopped diapason in the great is metal not wood

viol d orchetstre stops on swell and choir are not the obnoxious affair of other makes but gorgeous skinner orchestral refined string tone

        go hear it
