  • stops on an organ

What would be the typical 10 stops on a church/temple organ (their English names) (for the Great manual) and how many feet would each pipe be? For example, I know that one would be "8ft. Diapson on the Great Manual"

Also, " for the swell manual?

The most typical I would expect would be:

    Great
16' Wood - maybe a lieblich or stopped diapason I would guess.
    8' Open Diapason
    8' Flute
    8' Flute Celeste
    8' Harmonic Flute
    4' Flute
    4' Octave
    2' Fifteenth (aka Super Octave)
Mixture III or Mixture IV or Nazard 2 2/3 on a smaller organ
8' reed ... could be multiple ones here

After that it could be a mix of things. But that is the basics I would expect on the Great of that size. The bare minimum I would expect is the principal chorus and an extra 8 and 4' Flute.

    Don't know about the swell.

      Re: stops on an organ

I daresay the stops on the swell would depend on the type of organ. If it was an English style organ maybe you'd see things like

      Oboe 8'
      Vox celeste 8'
      Gamba 8'
      Gemshorn 8'/4'
Cornopean 8' or a horn of some sort
plus some flutes of some sort.

If it were in a more "German classical" style maybe it'd look like it had similar stops to the great but with different pitches (like the lowest diapason might be 4' instead of 8'), and if the swell were the only other manual you might see mutations like a tierce or nazard.

I found these articles most helpful in learning about organ design and stoplists:

      Hope that helps.

I forgot to mention that on some English organs you're more likely to find a mixture on the swell than on the great (unfortunately!)

          Re: stops on an organ

Here is an American design, well rounded with Pedals

          Great:
          16' Bourdon
          8' Diapason
          8' Rhorflote
          4' Octave
          4' Spitzflote
2 2/3 Twelfth, could be an 8' Gemshorn
          2' Superoctave
          2' Waldflote
          Mixture IV
          8' Trumpet

          Swell:
          8' Gedackt
          8' Salicional, or Viola
          8' Voix Celeste
          4' Principal
          4' Koppelflote
          2 2/3 Nasard
          2' Blockflote
          1 3/5 Terz
          16' Basson
          8' Trompette

          Pedal:
          16' Diapason
          16' Bourdon (Gt)
          8' Octave
          8' Gedacktflote
          4' Choralbass
          Mixture II
          16' Bombarde
          8' Trompette (Sw)

            Re: stops on an organ

I would be interested in knowing your thinking for why you put the 16' Bourdon in the Great before you had a 16' flue in the Swell. Also, why the Rohrflute in the Great when the Nasard is in the Swell? What would be gain/loss if you switched the Koppel and Spitz, both tapered flutes? If you have an independent 12th does the 2 2/3' show up in your Mixture? Is Terz just another name for Tierce to you? That having been said, I will flesh out my previous list and I see a high degree of similarity between my previous posting and yours.

Great Organ [10 stops, 13 ranks]
            16' Violone

            8' Harmonic Flute

            4’ Violone [ext]
            4' Copula
            2' Fifteenth
            2' Forest Flute
            IV Mixture 1 1/3' {Sp}
            8’ Trumpet

Swell (expressive) [10 stops, 10 ranks]
