  • Can Someone Advise On Swell Motor Problem

The motor that controls the swell box shutters is not functioning on the pipe organ at church. The connections on the back of the swell pedal all seem to be solid. There are 16 small multi-colored wires that connect the the pedal and the brushes that sweep across the metal plate when the expression pedal is manipulated. Everything looks ok there.

The swell box motor is plugged into a motor interconnect receptacle located inside the pipe chamber. There is a 7-pin connection at the box at the point where the motor is plugged in. I don't know what the voltages should be on these pins, but I do have about 4 volts DC between the white pin and ground. Smaller voltages between other pins to ground. So, it seems I've got power where the motor plugs into the motor interconnect. But is it correct? The next issues will be to climb higher into the pipe chamber to reach the motor itself.

I know I've not given a lot of info here, but does anyone have any suggestions about things I can check?

    Much appreciated.

Is this a Peterson unit? If so, telephone them on Monday (their toll-free number should be on the internet) and ask them about it. They are very helpful. Otherwise, try to see whose unit it is and contact them.

      Here's a radical idea...

Here's a radical idea. Get a real PIPE ORGAN TECHNICIAN to look at it. It could be any number of things, and do you want to risk messing up your instrument by fiddling with it???

More info would be helpful. is this a fully electronic swell sahde controller (like a Peterson model C, R-100, or R150)? or is it electro-pneumatic, and if so, with internal or external pneumatics? Not enough detailed info for a real diagnosis. Could be as simple as a blown fuse or broken lead wire, could be as complex as needing repairs to a circuit card with replacement components.
