  • Organ Mysteries

I have accepted the position of the interim organist at St. Matthias' here in Dallas.

We have a nice Reuter/Allen hybrid with 9 ranks of real pipes and a good amount of electronic stuff. The entire swell and pedal is Allen, as are the Great reeds and the 16' violone in the Great, but other than that the Great is real. It's a nice instrument, 2 mixtures on the great, 2 reeds on the great, 3 reeds on the swell, 2 mutations on the swell, a 4 rank mixture on the swell, and two 32' pedal stops.

It was installed in 2003, so it's really fairly new. The console and electronics are Allen and the case and the nameplate is Reuter.

However, there are two very puzzling things on this organ that I can't seem to figure out.

The organ has a Swell Unison Off but not sub/super octave couplers. When turned on, none of the Swell stops play. I have a guess it has to do with MIDI (the organ is entirely midi equipped), but I honestly have no clue.

The Great division has 3 blank stop knobs. Seems like they would be used for future additions, right? Well, after messing around with the organ long enough, I figured out that one of them is, get this, a Pedal to Great coupler! It is truely the wierdest thing. I was playing the 32' pedal reed on the great! I'm wondering why Reuter or Allen would include this feature...

I have no idea what's going on. I'm ignoring those two things for all practical purposes, but I would be interested to hear what y'all think it might be...

    Re: Organ Mysteries

just a guess, but the blank stop tabs are probably programable to whatever the organists wishes them to be.

I'm installing 2 blanks on each division of my home organ for just such a purpose. I will I guess be able to program them to do anything possible within the limits of the wiring of the organ.

So they could have been made for either new ranks in the future, and in the meantime are programmable?

Just trying to help. Won't make the same mistake twice. Like buzzyreed (r.i.p.), I'll confine my interest to reading.

Yes, of course, kpo6949. Sorry if I seemed rude.
