Does anyone use one nowadays? Is there any music written for them?

How many ranks can a portative have before it becomes too big to carry?

I've become interested in Portative Organs recently. As far as I can learn from the interwebs, portatives typically had only 1 rank of pipes, a range of about 2 octaves, and typically spoke at 4' pitch. I've got a rank of 37 String pipes that were once part of a Voix Celeste (these were the de-tuned pipes) that I am now having thoughts to turn into a portative. I had previously wanted to build a positive organ, but this project is too big for me to take on at the moment. I have a timber keyboard, and two partial ranks at the moment, but not enough to proceed.
