  • Half pipe half digital organ

Last week, I played thepipe organ at another church, and when I looked at the specification afterwards, I saw that on some of the pedal stops, it had (electronic) written next to it. Does this mean then that some of the stops are controlling a speaker somewhere in the organ, instead of some pipes? Does anyone know of any pipe organs also with a speaker in them?

Quite a lot. Rodgers has built many of them, even before they sent to digital tone generation. Allen has done it for many years. Many other digital organ builders offer pipe/digital hybrids.

Even pipe organ makers like Wicks, and Fratelli Ruffatti contract to make hybrids.

In fact, using electronic 32' pedal stops on pipe organs, goes all the way into the vacuum tube days.

When I visited the Crystal Cathedral organ some years ago I was shocked to learn there was a digital rank in the pedal division as well as a few in the gospel and epistle organs. It just goes to show that even the largest organs can harness these digital ranks as well.

I play a Rodgers on a regular basis that is half digital and half pipe and quite frankly find myself turning the pipes off (handy coupler) and using the digital ranks most of the time because of tuning issues. Other than that it is quite a nice organ!
