  • World's largest organs website

I just found this website today. It has pictures of some of the most unusual and even grotesque looking consoles I have ever seen. Interesting to see the Wanamaker organ is ranked as the number one largest, even though the AC organ has more pipes. The ranking is obviously done by ranks, not pipes.

    Enjoy!

Great website, Bill. Many thanks- I'm sure we will be having fun with it.

The UK doesn't make its debut on the list until #31, Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral.

Although I made mention of some unusual looking organs, check out the pics for number 5. Breathtakingly gorgeous!!! 13 and 19 are beautiful, too.

Wow, there are indeed some unusual looking organs on that site, and some gorgeous ones. There are also some great shots of the Crystal Cathedral I'd never seen before.

                    Jason,

I've played it ona number ofoccasions, but save those tears...

It is the epitome of 'neoclassical' - emphasison "neo". Think what you will.

Also, one has the feeling of being imprisoned within the Positif - with the mixtures a few inches away from one's eardrums.

The only way to hear the balance of the entire organ is through headphones. Might as well listen to a recording. [:(]

That, plus it is very disconcerting to deal with the time lag via the headphones.

Oh and one more thing - those headphones have been used by many, many people. [+o(]

Other than that (ha!) it is a thrilling experience, and a beautiful place.

We need another huge organ somewhere. The Royal Albert Hall in London was the biggest in the world at one time, but not any more :(

Wow, what a list! You have been quite busy in your life. I see two of my favorites on your list; the Cavaille-Coll organs at St. Denis and St. Sulpice.Do they soundas stunningly beautiful in person as theydo on the recordings I've heard?

If you love European organs (or any organ on a recording) - you must do your best to go and hear it in person. You will be amply rewarded.

Don't get me started on organs that I have heard, but not played![:D]

Yes, wasn't it? It was all I could do to keep from going into a terminal blush.

I will add that two of the UK organs on the list, St. Paul's in London and Liverpool Anglican, are overwhelming to hear live. Certainly you have heard them via recordings- but they only suggest what an experience they are live.

                            Cheers,

It would appear that the default sort criterion is the number of ranks; however, that can be changed in the options (at the right).
